Anyone can drown, no one should.
Drowning prevention starts with YOU:
👀 Supervise children & don’t look away when they're near water
🦺 Use safety equipment like life jackets & make sure they’re in place before going out on a boat
🏊♂️ Learn to swim, or if you can’t swim, stay away from the water
🌧️ Check the weather conditions, the depth of the water & the strength of the current before entering the water
🚫 Don’t drink alcohol near water. It dulls your senses & can cause fatal accidents near water
Remember! Drowning is often silent & goes unnoticed.
Watch for the signs when someone is struggling to stay afloat, it’s never too soon to respond.
Since January 1, more than 1000 #migrants have died, and numerous shipwrecks have been recorded in the Mediterranean, as people attempt to reach European shores. It’s the highest figure ever recorded in the first part of the year since 2014. ➡️What’s behind this record rise?

Sea routes to Europe were the deadliest in 2025, accounting for more than four in every 10 fatalities and disappearances, the UN said Tuesday.
Since 2014, the IOM has recorded a total of more than 80,000 deaths and disappearances on migration routes worldwide.
🖤 1.003 personas han muerto en lo que llevamos de 2026 intentando cruzar el Mediterráneo.
Detrás de cada cifra hay vidas. Personas con nombre, historia, familia y un futuro que quedó interrumpido en el mar.
🌎 Around 7,900 people died or disappeared on migration routes in 2025, the United Nations' migration agency has said.
The International Organization for Migration's Missing Migrants Project "has documented more than 80,000 deaths and disappearances during migration since 2014," the IOM said Tuesday.
“While these figures represent only the lowest boundary of the true number of affected people, they nevertheless emphasize the need for urgent action to end migrant deaths and address the complex needs of families left behind,” said the IOM.

The first-ever swimming gala in Uganda brought young people together for more than sport; it was about survival and climate change adaptation.
From learning essential water safety skills to understanding key DOs and DON’Ts, the week focused on preparing young people for rising water-related risks linked to climate change.
Uganda loses over 3,000 people every year to drowning, while globally the number is over 300,000.
As we move towards more climate adaptation and environmental protection actions, we want to remind everyone that anyone can drown, but no one has to!
Learn how to swim, and help someone else learn too. Watch the highlights and start practising today.

71 people are reported missing after a boat sank off Italy this weekend. Two bodies were recovered and 32 survivors were rescued by merchant ships.
These deaths are the result of political choices that block safe routes and criminalise rescues.
