I’ve long been convinced that NAVAIR didn’t really want the Super Hornet. Sure, elements of the Navy did, but I don’t think there was consensus it was the best option.

It was a jet that could do most things well enough to take the Navy into Y2K. The late ’80s Navy had an airplane problem: what they had was old and worn out, and planned buys were canceled or over budget then canceled. They needed jets that weren’t risky, wouldn’t break the bank, performed well enough, and were reliable. The Super Hornet fit the bill.

That doesn’t even cover the massive manpower savings from going from the Tomcat (2 seats), Intruder (2 seats), S-3 (4 seats), and Prowler (4 seats) down to a mix of single and two-seat Hornets and Rhinos. People are damn expensive.

The Navy has long known of a weakness in current strike radius, and I’m glad they’re addressing it. That said (call me old-fashioned), I wish the jet were manned.
