Elon Musk lost PayPal on his honeymoon. 2 years later, eBay paid $1.5 billion for it and he was still one of the biggest shareholders.
In January 2000 Elon married Justine. There was no time for a honeymoon. PayPal was growing fast, burning money fast, and needed to raise more.
So in September he combined the two. A fundraising trip that would end with a honeymoon in Australia. Two weeks away.
While he was gone, his own team went to the board. They had decided he was not the right person to run the company. Peter Thiel would take over.
Elon flew back. The vote was already done.
He later admitted to his biographer he was pretty angry at first. Justine said it was shocking, but she thought he handled it pretty well.
In this interview from 2008 he explains the choice he made. He could have fought hard. Instead, at a critical moment for the company, he conceded.
I didn’t agree with their conclusion, he said. But the better course of action is to turn the other cheek and make the relationship good.
A few months later he caught malaria and ended up in intensive care.
He recovered. He stayed on the board. He kept his shares.
In 2002 eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion. Elon put most of his money into two companies everyone said would fail: SpaceX and Tesla.
Years later Peter Thiel’s fund invested in SpaceX. The man who took his job became one of his investors.
Could you forgive the people who took your company while you were on your honeymoon?

VC investors have enabled the AI industry to bastardize revenue reporting.
In the 2010s, SaaS companies popularized reporting the metric of Annual Run Rate because it was a reliable measure of long term, contractual revenues into the future. The key is that the revenues are contracted and guaranteed thru the contract life hence why forecasting it forward is appropriate.
VCs have taken this to mean Annualized Run Rate when AI is concerned and where you take transactional/API revenue from the last month (or even last week in some cases) and forecast it forward.
It’s insane that investors have enabled this to happen but it’s happened.
Some news I’ve been excited to share: @gonzalosm7 is officially a co-founder of @gumloop
Gonzalo joined us two years ago as employee #5, back when Gumloop was a simple workflow platform. He was a key part of re-founding the company as the agent-building platform our customers know and love today.
Since then, we’ve 9x’d headcount and built a product that has automated over 1.3 billion tasks with Gonzalo leading our product and design teams the entire way.
More than that, he’s become the third voice in the room when the hard decisions get made. The title is just catching up to the role he’s been playing.
@rbehal1729 and I couldn’t be more excited to make it official. Congrats, Gonzalo!

One question I keep asking myself as a founder is whether we are solving a problem people have simply learned to live with.
That question matters to me because familiarity can make inefficiency look normal. We sit in traffic, follow directions that no longer make sense, and accept that the information guiding us might not reflect what is happening around us.
At PathPulse, I want to challenge that acceptance. We are building road intelligence that updates every 0.3 seconds because I believe people deserve better than decisions based on yesterday’s picture of the world. My goal is not to make people better at navigating broken systems. It is to help build systems that work better for people.
my mom's been making cakes forever and now she wants to turn it into a proper business, so i built her a website
i build software for strangers all the time but i've never made anything for my mom before
