@AGToddRokita As a private event business, similar to a marketing firm, they have zero obligation to protect your free speech by hosting events against their moral beliefs. Kind of like when the CO conservative courts allowed a wedding website not to host LGBTQ wedding invites. Stay consistent
Academia doesn't have more "time-flexibility," it has "accountability-flexibility." In sum, there's a lot of wasted and unproductive time in academia with little recourse until 5 years later when promotions come up. Academia's a self-regulated business that is bad at regulating.
I see we’re at the stage of anti-academia in here that we’re now claiming with a straight face that it offers less time flexibility and intellectual freedom *on average* than non-academic jobs.
OK.

How about depts absorbing "student awards" from donors & alumni instead of giving to the intended student to manage?

"Congrats you have been awarded XYZ scholarship! We'll tell you how much it's worth so you can put it on your CV, but you don't 'actually' get the money."
Hopkins rips off international workers.
Today's testimonial comes from a student who saw JHU take their hard-earned grant money from their home country b/c of so-called "stipend fairness." Grad workers deserve ALL earned grant money, regardless of everyone else's stipends:

@LisaStarrPhD Theres also an obligation of programs and institutions to be equally transparent. Depts and faculty are often not honest about their capacity to mentor, fund students, or expectations of student. Not to mention they need to ask themselves - why do students want to leave academia?
Not to mention the level of financial security to be able to fork out $1-2k+ months in advance, knowing you can't get reimbursed until after you've attended said conference 😮💨 In most cases, that's more than my monthly stipend.
The amount of time it takes grad students to get reimbursed for conference travel is outrageous and perpetuates inequalities in who can afford to stay in academia. Has anyone found good solutions for this problem? #AcademicTwitter
The good times kept rolling this week with @JohnsHopkinsDMH (not pictured, but worthy of mention: loaded tater tots and honey @OLDBAYSeasoning wings). s/o the the MHSG for organizing!
The @indgop voted on a #SB1 amendment which would have forced survivors of rape and incest - even children - to give birth to their attacker’s baby.
The policy failed, but here are the 18 State Senators who voted “YES”.
