One odd dynamic that I’ve seen repeatedly from private investors…

When they get an unsolicited premium offer, they become suspicious, almost offended.

The knee jerk reaction is to assume the other party is a bad actor.

It offends them that another buyer would look on their asset and tell them it’s worth more than they think it is.

I don’t see this behavior from founders operating their business. Most of them are happy to sell for what they think is a ridiculous premium.

But investors feel indicted. Like they’ve missed something or they aren’t doing a good job.

Ego is the enemy.

If it’s a real buyer, a real offer, engage. At worst, you will learn a ton. Maybe you can run their playbook and extract that value yourself.

You may also get an unexpectedly great outcome.

What’s to lose?

The only way to lose is to halfheartedly and defensively engage.
