Courts are closed tomorrow for Juneteenth. My incarcerated clients, all of whom are black men, will remain in jail to celebrate the emancipation of slaves. This is America.
2 years. Over 1500 cases. Forever grateful for each of my clients in Maryland. Thank you for keeping me going through the toughest of days. Now on to King County Department of Public Defense and my forever home in Seattle.
I don’t have advice for 1Ls. All I offer is this: I was a first generation law student. On my first day of law school, I’d never read a case, never talked to a lawyer in real life, and could not have distinguished a tort from a tart. It was bewildering at first and then it was ok

Absolutely this. District court case loads are unsustainable in Maryland. 26-32 cases set for trial in a single day with attorneys in court 2 or 3 times a week. We are struggling and our clients are the ones suffering the most.
I’ve never been more concerned about the 6th amendment right to counsel. If courts don’t open, if caseloads aren’t reduced, if public defender offices aren’t properly funded - CLIENTS WILL SUFFER & THERE WILL BE NO ONE LEFT TO DO THE WORK! #FundPublicDefense#EndMassIncarceration

Talked with a cop outside the grocery. She said shoplifting of food has gone up, and I said "That's sad—so many people have gotten desperate during the pandemic." And she said "Well it's mostly homeless people; I haven't caught many normal people stealing"

Breaking: The Biden admin will extend the freeze on federal student loans until Jan. 31, 2022, per official & sources familiar. The relief had been set to expire at the end of Sept.
Official describes this as a “final” extension.
Imagine what public defenders could do if their caseloads were cut in half. If they were provided with the necessary amount of investigators, paralegals, social workers, support staff & money for expert witnesses. Just imagine... #FundPublicDefense#EndMassIncarceration
Is it just me or does every public defender out there struggle with “I can’t do this anymore” after sobbing over a client and the pain of their life, magnified by the system…only to wake up and keep doing this?
And yes I have read Trauma Stewardship lol.
