@Hamilton4TX@bendreyfuss liberal governor for the decades of building, land use, water use, and population growth decisions in a fire-prone desert environment might feel good. It's also probably WAY too simple. And not likely to lead to real solutions.
@Hamilton4TX@bendreyfuss part of the issue. But protecting vulnerable areas from catastrophic disasters is (and has always been) very expensive. It's getting harder, and as the insurance markets in FL, LA, and CA (politically mixed states btw) show, increasingly expensive. Blaming one current (4/x)
@GizmoNYC_420@SocDoneLeft@ScooterCasterNY He totally has the right to choose, still. But every choice comes with different costs. There are costs to maintaining roads, subways, sidewalks, etc. I'm free to eat at whatever restaurant will seat me. But I don't get the lunch for free.
@Smokerscough3@KylePostingOnX@TaylorMatthewD@WajahatAli The thread was talking about Christian nationalism much more than white nationalism. There's overlap but they are quite different. Also Christian nationalists have long supported the Jewish community (hence the Hebrew) up to a point, as being a step toward Christian supremacy
@smquinsaat will grant a usable understanding of what to do to defend their own civil and environmental rights. Basically, I would love to know how you help students reckon with the fundamental differences you have encountered in research. I/we do good work in helping students think...
@smquinsaat And the students sense that they live in a different world from many other Americans, but aspects of those differences (at least) feel insurmountable. Like, they want to understand the world they live in, but it's not as if diving deep down the far-right info rabbit hole
@JKSteinberger To be more clear, it's not clear that this is an indictment of dem policies as opposed to dem vibes. And I really don't know what to do with that. As someone who'd really like the policy to fly leftward, how to make it sound appealing to this electorate is a mystery to me atm
@JKSteinberger It's not like Trump is offering anything in that regard either. Now, if your point is that a real left option would provide economic alternatives that would peel trump voters away, that's something, but also, the language/rhetoric of "the far left" seems to be trouble itself.
@IncreaseMyT@bringthesalt@ECOWARRIORSS Where are these graphs coming from? That bottom graph isn't making a lot of sense. the scale is from 8-11 C, which is 46-52 F, which doesn't match up at all with what we've been talking about. I'm confused...
@IncreaseMyT@bringthesalt@WxNB_@NWSPhoenix Also, I can't help but wonder: Camp Verde is ninety miles from Phoenix. Are there different conditions there that would affect these understandings? The report you posted is fascinating (and I love the tidbits about the doctors' lives), but I don't see extended <110F in there.
@umichvoter Related, aid may be slower to flow since there's so much recovery work still going on in NC and elsewhere. Everyone is going to do their best, of course, but that's an added layer of risk. I would ask your parents what they think they gain by staying. Might be instructive?
@umichvoter Obviously, every storm is different, but I work with folks in Southern LA, and everyone who stayed for Ida (direct hit) regretted it, and the folks who do disaster prep/recovery are VERY quick to leave.
