We have had multiple bike-on-ped fatalities in Central Park in the past decade, and exactly one horse carriage fatality that anyone can find in nearly 200 years. Of course, all are tragic and all should have been prevented, but it is perplexing that the Conservancy, which is actually supposed to stay out of fraught NYC political and policy issues, cares about one and not the other. The pedicabs and ebikes are rampant all over the pedestrian paths.
The proposed NYC carriage horse ban, Intro 943, is a recipe for economic disaster for immigrant workers and their families, with the strong potential of harm for the horses themselves. Councilman Abreu's grandstanding, duplicitous video, using his goddaughter as a political prop in support of Intro 943, doesn’t change that one iota. @TwuSamuelsen@ShaunAbreu@ChrisMarteNYC@NYCCouncil@JulieMenin@CMMercedesCD46@CnDelarosa@Lynn4NYC@JoannAriola32
Fact check @CMShaunAbreu who says horses should be free in "fields." Horses free in fields have half the lifespan of other horses. Just like cats and dogs who run free. There are approximately 200,000 unwanted horses in the US every year. @NYCCouncil@JulieMenin@TWULocal100
A load of horse manure from the Central Park Conservancy and its $1.3 million-a year “nonprofit” CEO Betsy Smith. Polling by Slingshot and the Honan Strategy Group found strong support for enhanced regulation and oversight to keep the horses in the @CentralParkNYC and not destroy the livelihood of the immigrant drivers and carriage owners. @NYCCouncil@Lynn4NYC@CMMercedesCD46@CnDelarosa@AmandaFariasNYC@TwuSamuelsen
The @CentralParkNYC is sounding more like NYCLASS every day.
“Saltonstall argued the poll was the first conducted without an agenda..”
The nonprofit, and its $1.3 million a year CEO, came out against carriage horses last year & has pushed that agenda ever since. @TwuSamuelsen
"Most New Yorkers, when provided with unbiased information, oppose a ban. They don't want to see immigrant carriage drivers, owners, and their families economically wiped out. They don't want to see carriage horses forced into unpredictable and dangerous futures. They know that some would very likely end up at slaughter auctions or be euthanized. They want more regulation and enforcement, and we support that." The Central Park Conservancy should be using donations to fix the park’s many problems, like removing the killer toxic plants they planted without telling anyone. A Central Park horse, just 16 years old, chomped on a deadly yew and died last month. New Yorkers deserve better. After all, the CEO of the “nonprofit” Conservancy, Betsy Smith, raked in $1.3 million in pay and compensation last year – a boost of $350,000 from the prior year. Working for a non-profit sure can be rewarding. @NYCCouncil@NYCMayor@Lynn4NYC@JoannAriola32@CnDelarosa@TyHankerson@CMMercedesCD46
This is a great piece every @NYCCouncil member, @NYCMayor & @SpeakerMenin should read before destroying lives & doing damage that will forever put them on the wrong side of history as the ones who helped end an iconic, proud NYC tradition, if they support a carriage horse ban!
This is 100% about @GovKathyHochul and her concessionary contract demands, not the @NYCMayor and his efforts to improve bus service. @TWULocal100 transit workers deserve a fair contract recognizing their vital role and the ongoing affordability crisis. @TwuSamuelsen
THIS is ACTUALLY what park goes are afraid to see or experience, @ShaunAbreu -My horse carriage customer said they felt bad for the woman in this e-bike accident yesterday. We see these accidents DAILY; Incidents with carriage horses are RARE! Your priorities are backwards!
