📢 🌱 🎉🇪🇺 Big milestone for plant breeding in Europe!
@EUparliament has adopted the NGT Regulation after ~10 years of uncertainty.
Thank you to rapporteur @jessicapolfjard, all MEPs, @EUCouncil & @EU_Commission representatives, and stakeholders who worked for years to reach this outcome.

Today is a big moment for the future of European agriculture.
After more than two years of political debate, scientific engagement, public campaigning, and behind-the-scenes advocacy, the European Parliament's ENVI Committee will vote tonight on proposed amendments to the New Genomic Techniques (NGT) legislation.
The outcome could determine whether Europe finally moves closer to unlocking the benefits of these technologies. NGTs have the potential to help farmers grow more resilient crops, reduce inputs such as pesticides and fertilisers, strengthen food security, and support a more sustainable agricultural system.
There are two possible outcomes.
If the committee rejects the amendments, the legislation can proceed to a final vote in the European Parliament this Wednesday, 17 June. That would bring Europe a major step closer to implementation after years of discussion.
If amendments are adopted, the file will return to further negotiations, creating more delays and uncertainty for farmers, researchers, breeders, and innovators across Europe.
At WePlanet, we've been part of this effort from the beginning. Together with scientists, farmers, policymakers, and supporters, we've worked to keep evidence-based agricultural innovation on the agenda. From open letters signed by Nobel laureates and leading researchers, to policy engagement, media work, events, and public campaigning, we've helped build support for a more science-based approach to agriculture.
Now the finish line is in sight.
Our petition has already been used in policy briefings and meetings with decision-makers. Every signature helps demonstrate that Europeans support innovation in agriculture.

After more than two years of political debate, scientific engagement, public campaigning, and behind-the-scenes advocacy, the European Parliament's ENVI Committee last night voted to approve the New Genomic Techniques (NGT) legislation without amendment.
The legislation will now go to a full vote of the parliament tomorrow.
The outcome could determine whether Europe finally moves closer to unlocking the benefits of these technologies. NGTs have the potential to help farmers grow more resilient crops, reduce inputs such as pesticides and fertilisers, strengthen food security, and support a more sustainable agricultural system.

@philipbethge
Next steps should be:
➡️ Invest at scale to unlock new solutions to plant pests, climate, nutrition ++
➡️ Improve public understanding. NGT plants are safe
➡️ Strengthen international collaboration and remove regulatory obstacles to trade
➡️ Speed up work on #NGTs animals.
The EU #NGT#GenomeEditing regulation got a BIG YES in the ENVI committee: 56 YES and 32 NO. Thus, the formal FINAL approval by the plenary on June 17, is now set to be "a walk in the park".
Congratulations to science, reason and pragmatism in Europe.
I wrote about the rich, centuries-old Ukrainian history of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — and how Russia’s barbaric strike on it is just the latest effort to destroy it. My latest for @KyivIndependent. https://t.co/SnvJfUXerr

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has one of the few labs in the world which can study Ebola virus.
In March 2025 RFK Jr had it shut down.
We now have a huge Ebola outbreak on our hands.
What a foolish move
