Obviously I’m being a bit hyperbolic here, but shouldn’t research be done by people who literally cannot help themselves. They think in p-values. They have hypotheses pouring out of their massive brains. Just like a surgeon only wants to be in the OR doing surgery. Instead, we have an army of pre-meds, med students, and residents who feel an obligation to “do research” as a means to an end. Doesn’t make sense. What are we doing?
Private equity looted 3 Connecticut hospitals. Services cut, nurses buying their own supplies etc. They will do it to your hospital if we don't stop this trend right now.
1/ Today I'm releasing a report on the truth about private equity in health care.

@DrBeccaK and @PubHealthDahl kicking off #sbm2025 with a #scicomm pre-conference workshop. Excited to teach our group more about infographics, op-eds, speaking to the press, communicating with community members, and more! First pro-tip: keep infographics to 150 words.
We’re already on to the second set of pre-conference workshops at #SBM2025! 🚀
Between 11:00 and 13:00, attendees are getting hands on training with #SciComm, #JITAIs, #Implementation & more! 🧠
💣TORPEDOING MEDICAL RESEARCH—NIH indirect grant funding just got slashed by Trump to 15%. What does this mean for you? Colleges and universities won’t be able to support students, tuition will increase, especially graduate students & researchers who find cures/preventions for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and more. This will not only raise tuition and hurt pipeline of future scientists/doctors, but COMPLETELY DECIMATE MEDICAL & PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH. It will also give more power to big pharma to manipulate research agendas and buy out ideas that should remain in the public domain. Ie THE RICH BIOTECH TYCOONS (eg Vivek Ramaswamy) WILL GET RICHER. The lay public will someday only see future drug/tech prices soar as biotech and big pharma control more science and make more money.
Also, Trump’s NIH posted this graphic - but it ignores that most public universities also heavily rely on indirect to subsidize tuition, and train next generation of scientists and medical doctors doing research. (Public colleges can’t compete with wealthier schools who do have endowments, and hence will fall further behind). Public colleges that do medical research will literally fall apart without this mechanism.
Memos posted publicly to government websites claiming to be from the acting directors of OPM and OMB have metadata showing that the original authors are affiliated with Project 2025.
Feeling stressed about #NIH freeze? Things you can do:
1. 📞 Call your Senators & Reps. Highlight the economic impact NIH funding has, ask for bipartisan work to end the freeze
2. 🧘♀️ Yoga, deep breaths, ground yourself
3. 👩🔬 Science. Keep doing the work.

No study section...no grant reviews
No grant reviews...no grants awarded
No grants awarded...no research
No research...no functional NIH
And if your salary was funded by NIH, no paycheck either if this lasts indefinitely
All study sections cancelled. The same study sections we treat with the utmost respect. Years of work going into each grant, months of work going into each review. Lives, futures, careers, science, truth, all at stake.
We didn't get to organ transplantation, MRI scans, cardiac stents, insulin treatment, or vaccines by homeopathy or functional medicine.
It was science.
Also unclear how clinical psychology residents in the match are affected. VA = 1 of the biggest and best educators for the clinical psychology workforce. This must be fixed immediately. Veterans and the general public deserve quality care and well trained professionals.
When someone puts their life on the line to defend this country in uniform, we in turn, promise them health care after their service.
Trump froze all hiring at the VA at a time when the VA is experiencing a shortage of doctors & nurses. Unacceptable. Our veterans deserve better.
So, in addition to a communications pause, a freeze on hiring, and an indefinite ban on travel, the Trump administration has now abruptly cancelled crucial NIH meetings related to biomedical research, infectious disease (including Bird Flu), cancer research, vaccines and more.
One NIH scientist was quoted as saying, “The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating.”
What the fuck is he doing?
The fact that vaccines work is not dependent on your views, feelings or your political orientation.
It's indisputable.
Look at diphtheria for example
It's just fact
Once you register for #SBM2025, if you need it be sure to register your interest for the childcare stipend. First time I’ve seen a sci org offer this! This would be so impactful and responsive to the needs of young families with scientist parents. Thank you, SBM!! See you there!
Join us for SBM's 46th Annual Meeting in San Francisco this upcoming March 26-29. 🌟 Register for #SBM2025 before prices increase on February 27!
