Here’s a handful of newts to brighten your day. During breeding season, female eastern newts can lay between 200 and 400 eggs—many of which are eaten by predators. However, offspring that do survive can live for up to 15 years.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper. Only about 50,000 in the world. Sounds like a lot, but almost the entire population migrates through east Texas during a narrow window of time. Destruction of grasslands along its migratory path has caused its numbers to plummet. In my life, it's not impossible that these birds could disappear. This one, sadly, was all by itself, migrating alone.
