In today’s @latimes: My column on Gavin Newsom’s continued failure to close the Aliso Canyon gas storage field, 9 years after a record-breaking methane leak — or even acknowledge his long-ago promise to try to shut it down before 2027: https://t.co/Ssh4U1e4PL
When a filmmaker turns his lens on the mysteries of the brain. Can't wait to see this movie from #WernerHerzog.

My emotions almost exploded when liftoff of the Europa Clipper happened!! I've waited for a Europa mission for as long as I can remember. This is INCREDIBLE! Off to explore this water world 🥹😀
✨Almost a year ago @tamarakrinsky and I flew to Arizona to film our @Scirens short film: The Assignment... a collaboration between us and @imaginationASU to celebrate the message of The Climate Action Almanac.

I just re-read my 2014 blog post that launched @Scirens: https://t.co/wKBwtR9IA3
It was a plea for public science and tech literacy facilitated through entertainment... why? Because I saw our survival depending on it in the face of future A.I. tech advancements and climate change. That if we didn't have general sci-tech literacy how could we elect officials that did?
This was 10 years ago.
Now that future is here.
And we see leadership that has failed its communities
Hollywood does less impact storytelling today than it did back then. (I didn't do a very good job of swaying them!) It is now a sea of streamers with dwindling margins that care about stock price not cause.
I have lost faith in this industry.
So what are the other media apparatuses that can support the arts and entertainment that we need to catalyze curiosity around understanding our fast changing world and creating community resilience in the face of it? Tik Tok? There has to be something additional.
Before every movie shown during WW2 was a govt. commissioned newsreel or short film that sought to galvanize support around the war efforts and educate around food rationing and first aid. President Roosevelt commissioned Hollywood to "emotionalize" the conflict and to mobilize public awareness. it worked.
What is the updated version of this?
I'm here for this discussion. It's a complicated one, especially in our dived political climate. But what is not complicated is the Power of Storytelling, especially when shared (on screens). Perhaps we need an updated Participant Film, or @laurenepowell, @mackenziescott to launch an indie studio (maybe @anoncontent can have an impact arm). The production entities out there that do create impact content need to be networked and supported. Communities need to use the tools of storytelling to foster knowledge and resilience.
I have a feeling that with storm #Helene we have crossed the climate rubicon. The time for 'what ifs' is over, it's the time for 'what now'. It's a new story.
------
Thinking of all the communities that are facing overwhelming devastation. May we all support them as best we can.

All such wonderful books! (reminds me to finish @HopeJahren's). I also recommend @imaginationASU's 'The Climate Action Almanac': https://t.co/kOc2lvxwZ4 All the beautiful short stories, novellas and essays are online and it should be published next year. (It's what our @scirens short film 'The Assignment' was a celebration of)
