I watched @pennykittle work through the process of writing this during an online PD. I’m so glad she gave it life!
Doesn't the #TxLege have bigger priorities than weakening civics education & whitewashing history? I stand with educators who #TeachTheTruth & oppose #SB3.
Nervous about talking about race in school? Professor @RuizSealey writes: “In schools, healthy conversations involving race across class, culture, and other characteristics of diversity are possible.” We agree. Read the entire piece published by @NCTE. https://t.co/mSsCsBnrXq
I would encourage every school district to remove something from their teachers plate without adding anything new this fall. As long as we expect teachers to con't to work 50-60+ hours per week, weekends and holidays, then the only real self care is leaving the field.
@Mr_Rablin@TheAaveMaria Rote learning is only good if it’s the first step in the journey. It will help clear some space during problem solving when it’s memorized at the surface level. The problem is when the teacher doesn’t move it from rote to meaningful, surface to deep structure
When we're born, our mothers show us compassion. This is a natural response without which we wouldn't survive. Our lives begin with an experience of kindness and compassion. Mothers’ Day is a good day to remember how important compassion can be.
As we've said before: we teach young people, NOT books. If you're more concerned about the books you teach and not meeting the needs of the young people before you, you're off. The books are tools. Ask: what is the best tool I can use to meet the need they have? #DisrupTexts
As schools design summer reading programs, please resist competitions/contests that create reading winners & losers. Readers motivated for personal reasons are more likely to remain interested in reading than readers who are externally motivated through rewards.
