Excellent first day of LAI/CILIP Annual Conference yesterday, hosted in my home town. Thanks to @CILIPIreland for the bursary. Looking forward to day two! #LAICILIP2026#Monaghan
Sad to hear of the impending demise of The Northern Standard - hard to imagine any modern media recording the life of the Monaghan area in the way that this newspaper did for almost two centuries. https://t.co/Ojpk5xX05t

Ahead of our colleague Seán Corr's illustrated talk on 26/02 at 6pm we are displaying on Level 4 of the Library the 1842 Journal of a Passage From Belfast to New York. This fascinating handwritten journal from our archives provides a detailed account of a six-week journey of the passenger ship New Zealand, which departed Belfast in May 1842, and arrived at New York City in early July of that year. Last few tickets for Seán's talk available at https://t.co/Gi2woKd9Ri
1842 Journal of a Passage from Belfast to New York
26th February – 6pm – 7pm
£5.00 – £6.50
Join Senior Library Assistant at The Linen Hall, Seán Corr, for an illustrated talk focusing on the 1842 Journal of a Passage From Belfast to New York.
This fascinating handwritten journal from The Linen Hall archives provides us with a detailed account of a six-week journey of the passenger ship New Zealand, which departed Belfast in May 1842, and arrived at New York City in early July of that year. The anonymous author describes incidents of note during the voyage, his interactions with his fellow passengers, as well as mentioning some of the literature he was reading on the journey.
The journal gives us a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of a typical transatlantic voyage from almost two centuries ago.

Just visited Holy Trinity Church in Clogh, Co. Fermanagh where my great, great grandfather Dr Thomas Graydon is remembered on the family gravestone. He was born in Roslea in 1850 but, like so many others, emigrated to the United States where he died in 1900, age 49.
My #CILIPConf24 comes to a close after a busy Day Two with talks on the theme of leadership, an interview with author @TammyeHuf and a panel discussion on Inclusive Collections. Thanks to all involved for a well organised, informative and fun conference! @CILIPIreland@CILIPinfo
