@feedtheball@GolfDigest I am referring to a Passov article about underrated architects on the Links Mag website. I think you both use “Des” because you think it makes you seem deeply in the know. Aussie golfers just read it and shake their heads at the failure to learn about our golden age pioneers.
@feedtheball@GolfDigest Dan Soutar was a prolific newspaper columnist and book author. He never referred to himself as “Des”. It’s essentially just you & Joe Passov who do. It’s a perverse hill to choose to die on, but here we are.
@feedtheball@GolfDigest I’ve played the course 500 times in the last 30 years and been a member for a decade. I’m comfortable with that perspective of NSWGC’s modern history.
Would love to see evidence of Dan Soutar calling himself Des.
@feedtheball@GolfDigest No. He went by Dan because that (Daniel) was his name. The succession of postwar architects also did nothing to “re-establish the integrity” of NSWGC. They just changed a bunch of greens until none of them sat comfortably alongside one another.
@KVanValkenburg Is Rory overrated as an observer of golf courses and setups? He seems to have been anointed without having ever said anything especially enlightened.
All the people touching themselves over Rory’s comments about golf courses need to remember that when he was asked for his 10-Round Split between Quail Hollow & Royal County Down, he was spending six of those rounds in North Carolina.

@nicko_316@PGAofAustralia Nah, the whispers always said The Lakes. I don’t think pro golf is in NSWGC’s future. Reckon the next major event we host will be the Asia-Pacific Am, maybe in ‘28 for our centenary.
@mikeclaytongolf@RoscoJohnson That bail out has become less manageable over the years. The hillside veg grew back in following construction & so now it’s OOB right or lost ball left. Which on a back nine with the likes of 12, 15, 16, 17 being so scoreable isn’t a bad thing. It’s a scary drive.
