On the bright side there’s a lot of progress in improving bus service in Minneapolis but it simply is not competitive with cars unless you’re directly going between points on the improved service. Lots of cases where 15 minute drive would be a 45 minute bus ride.

Irony is not lost on me that I landed in AMS while reading the news that Northstar commuter rail is being shut down. Not just bikes was correct that it’s best to live where it works the way you want rather than where every step is a challenge.

Don’t ignore chains too. If you’re someplace less populated (car trip!) you can still find food that is much much better than you get at home but at a chain. (Yoshinoya, Kura, CoCo come to mind)

If you want to have a reference setting meal that Michelin guide still applies. That said, very good in Tokyo reviewed on tabelog won’t even be in the guide and will be better than anything you’ve had outside of Japan for that category in many cases.

Eating out culture in Tokyo is not like other cities. Tokyo has 10x the number of restaurants compared to LA so the whole idea of a top 10 or top 50 list is just nonsense. Tokyo breaks the conventional model that there’s some specific place all the way across town worth going to.

In Tokyo there’s probably some place worth going to about a 2 minute walk from exactly where you currently stand.

It has a very high “excellent random meal” factor because of the high volume of restaurants. You just have to get used to using google to see what’s in the vicinity, rather than trying to go to some place on a list, filled with tourists, far away from you, where you’ll also have to queue.

If you’re visiting Tokyo I would just completely ditch Michelin guides, lists, and even recommendations from friends. Just see what’s around you at the time you’re hungry.

CitizenM+ dropped room availability guarantees from the subscription and harmonized with Marriott tiers. Absolutely no reason to use it if you already have status with Marriott. It’s possible to cancel before the change goes into effect in about a month.

It’s hard to find just one word to express my feelings about the assassination of MN Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. One of the first roles Melissa ever took in politics was working for me in the U.S. Senate. Though she was only there for a short time, she had a lasting impact on our team. I can tell that the same is true of the many others who worked with her throughout her impactful career as a public servant and leading climate advocate.

There is absolutely no excuse for political violence and everyone in public life must condemn this horrific tragedy. My prayers go out to her children and all who loved her.
