Just a reminder. If you want to continue to ride the soccer revolution in THIS country, you have plenty of options. Do not listen to strangers on the Internet. Go experience it for yourself IN PERSON. @USMNT@USWNT@MLS@USLLeagueOne@USLChampionship@USL_HQ@Concacaf@NWSL
This is a really excellent thread, showing how much work it takes to debunk the viral nonsense that spreads on this website (in this case, by @elonmusk). One lie that Elon posts in 3 seconds can take hours of work to unpack and ultimately expose as nonsense.
To be clear: birth tourism is ALREADY illegal and, in the event airlines even let an extremely pregnant woman fly, CBP officers have discretion to turn her away if they suspect her intention is birth tourism.
You don't need to change birthright citizenship for this.
Brilliant experiment.
Says something interesting about the rules of attention in algorithmic media that if you basically destroy the accounts with the most engagement, it ironically increases overall engagement, bc the best attention-maxxers are basically engagement parasites that gobble up views and, in the process, annoy the shit out of people.
Altho I think it uh raises an um uncomfortable question for X's head of product about whether shadow-banning a uh certain owner of a certain platform would increase daily active users on that particular platform.
The magnitude of Trump's personal corruption and the monetizing of the presidency by him and his family have no precedent in US history.
It takes a total peasant mentality, or some weird cultish devotion, to defend or excuse this, especially if you objected to corrupt Biden transactions (as I did). It's on a completely different scale.
Trump set up a crypto company (World Liberty Financial) 4 days before his inauguration, then had the UAE pour hundreds of millions into his pockets for 49% of it, then gave rewards to the UAE. Jared getting $2 billion from the Saudis. On and on and on.
BREAKING: Trump went on a stock buying spree the day before his April 9, 2025 tariff pause that sent the S&P 500 soaring for the index's third-biggest gain since World War II, according to a Sludge review of his new financial disclosure. https://t.co/YpM7plFrav
To everyone celebrating the first flight on Qatar Force One today, understand what you are actually applauding.
A foreign government handed the sitting President of the United States a $400 million plane. American taxpayers then paid to retrofit it, with an estimated cost of at least another $400 million (some estimates far higher), for security and communications work in a Texas hangar since last September.
When Trump leaves office, the plane does not stay with the government. Ownership transfers to his presidential library foundation. In other words, he keeps it.
You are being asked to treat pure corruption as normal, to shrug at a President personally profiting from a foreign gift the taxpayers paid to upgrade.
In any other administration this would be the scandal that ends a presidency.
With Trump, it’s Wednesday.

Elon Musk is the richest person in the world. He has an effectively infinite budget for hiring researchers and fact-checkers. And yet like 50% of his utterances on here are horseshit. Please read this thread to understand how time-consuming it is to debunk them.
Originalism is such a sham.
Here is Kavanaugh inviting the Court to create new "exceptions" to birthright citizenship "recognized based on new developments after 1868."
Ask the same for abortion or voting rights, and he'd laugh you out of the room.
It was struck down 6-3 decision, although only 5-4 on the Constitutional question. Four justices would have rewritten the Constitution's plain text and ignored centuries of precedent on the scope of birthright citizenship. Thankfully, they were the minority.
“We spotted nine Polymarket accounts, all connected, who made, collectively,$2.4 million betting almost exclusively on U.S. military operations,” says Nicolas Vaiman, co-founder of the small data analytics firm Bubblemaps.
“And now here's the crazy part: 98% win rate.” https://t.co/wrTjsWhXxW
The discussion about @elonmusk's comments on humanitarian aid has mostly focused on our values, which seems right. But note that USAID served our interests as well as our values, by protecting us from diseases like the Ebola outbreak now ravaging Congo.
Given the structure of the U.S. tax system, our healthcare aid to Africa cost the average American almost nothing - on the order of $6-$8 a year - and saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives a year. The benefit to cost ratio was immense. And Musk demolished it because he listened to cranks' paranoid fever dreams.
Musk is right that many problems can't be solved just by "throwing money" at them.
But US aid to fight AIDS, child hunger & other global plagues has one of the highest ROIs in government.
The data is clear: cutting this $ means millions will die. The question is how many.
USAID was not a perfect program and reform of international development is a legitimate policy discussion. That is a separate question from whether abruptly withdrawing medication and food a child depends on to survive causes that child's death.
Dobson-Hughes's answer is the correct one: if a child needs a specific medication or specific food to stay alive and you remove it without any way for them to obtain it elsewhere, you caused their death. That is not a complicated moral or epidemiological argument. It is the definition of proximate cause.
The documented figure: over 500,000 children are estimated to have already died due to USAID cuts. Hundreds of thousands more lost parents. USAID saved an estimated 92 million lives over two decades including 30.4 million children under five. The positive trend in child mortality - halved since 1990, the first improvement in the numbers in thirty years - reversed in 2025. Around 200,000 more children are believed to have died in 2025 than in 2024. Every one of them had a name. Every one of them had someone who loved them.
