My family insist that academia is a cult that starts by separating you from family. They question why I don’t get paid when I publish, why I pay to go to a conference & present my work, & why I make so little with advanced degrees when I could make more doing something else.
7 years ago when looking for my first postdoc a male professor ended a conversation with me by saying I could go and work in the local grocery store if all else fails. It still stings!!!
