There’s a strange tension here. Nolan de-sexes 2 of the horniest women in the history of books assigned to kids. Book Circe beds Odysseus (apparently it goes well; he stays a year) before restoring his men. Calypso isn’t a lonely sea-therapist; Odysseus is her sexual captive.

Not saying “feminist Odyssey” must retain sexualized women (nods to vast feminist literature on the male gaze). But Circe/Calypso aren’t just objects of desire; they desire and wield very real power. Turning them into safe, nurturing caretakers is a bizarre modernization.

*My* main "big picture" critique of the Odyssey is stripping express reference to the Gods/divinity from it (I read "Athena" as a haunting memory of a priestess, not actual Athena). Which you can do, but not really in a movie that has cyclopes and Laestrygonians.
