What many don’t realise is that the British monarchy has essentially been a German dynasty for the last 300 years. This means his direct forefathers were German princes!
It all started because of religion. Catholics were banned from the throne, so in the early 1700s, Parliament had to recruit the royal family’s closest Protestant relative.
That was George I of Hanover, a German prince who moved to London speaking almost no English.
In fact, the British Royal Family only changed its name to the House of Windsor during World War I. Before that, they bore the German name; House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. But they needed a "British-sounding" name to distance themselves from Germany which had become the enemy.
