I'm pleased to share our latest preprint: Combinatorial effects of gene dosage, polygenic background and environment on complex traits 🧵https://t.co/KBpAJXm6nn
New [Souaiaia et al. 2026 Nature] paper argues that there is "distinct genetic architecture in the tails of complex traits". Some of my thoughts:
I'm not a fan of framing traits as having distinct architectures at the extremes when it's not really what's going on
B.S. MDs are the only people I know who are addressed as “doctor” by their co-workers. I know very few academic scientists who refer to themselves or their colleagues by their credentials. “Dr.” is used mainly as formal way of addressing someone who you have just met.
Medical Doctors: Hey, I'm the cardiologist keeping you alive, just call me Alex.
PhDs: Please refer to me as Dr. Monica, I did my thesis on ancient pottery.
Look, I know the word 'Doctor' comes from the Latin docere (to teach). I know academics had the title first and I have full respect for the grind. But why are they always the ones defending the title like their lives depend on it?
If someone screams "Is there a doctor on the plane?!" absolutely nobody is looking for a Doctor of Philosophy

Trigger warning. Today's Press Play with @TheMadBrand is not suitable for parents that are still recovering from PBSSD (Post Baby-Shark Stress Disorder). My youngest is now a freshman in college and I'm still recovering from that earworm.

@girishkaitholil@MariaChahrour Yes some of the missing rare variant contributions are SVs and especially TRs that are not captured well by short reads. Equally important though is inferring the functional consequence of variants that were already detected by SR-WGS but could not be assembled end to end
@Helena_LB Yeah usually the channel the driver was listening to originally is better than the one they change it to when they pick up suburban white people. I guess they only hear from the people that complain
A news reporter asked Michael Jordan if he thought the ’90s Bulls could beat LeBron’s Lakers.
MJ: Yes.
Reporter: By how much?
MJ: Two or three points.
Reporter: Why so close?
MJ: Most of us are almost 60 now.
