News: AI-driven cyber-attacks surge across #Africa, with #Ethiopia hardest hit
Africa is facing a rapid escalation in cyber-attacks fuelled by artificial intelligence and accelerated digitalisation, with Ethiopia emerging as the most targeted country on the continent, according to the African Perspectives on Cyber Security Report 2025 released by Check Point Software Technologies.
The report finds that organisations in Africa now face more than 3 000 cyber attacks per week on average. #Nigeria recorded the highest number of attacks among the countries analysed, but Ethiopia ranked as the most targeted nation overall, with organisations experiencing more than 11 000 attacks per week, South Aficaβs media iAFRICA reported.
Speaking to Channel Africa on Thursday, Check Pointβs Head of Security Consulting for the Southern African Development Community said Nigerian organisations face more than 4 200 weekly attacks, while #South_African organisations encounter about 2 200.
He linked Ethiopiaβs exceptionally high attack rate to rapid digital transformation, noting that as organisations move from paper-based processes to digital systems and adopt cloud services, their digital attack surface expands, creating more opportunities for attackers. He stressed that security must be integrated into digital solutions and the digitisation process itself.
The report highlights distinct national patterns. South Africa has seen a rise in ransomware attacks by financially motivated groups increasingly focused on data theft for extortion, while Kenya has faced attacks on critical infrastructure potentially involving state-linked actors seeking physical disruption.
Looking ahead, the report warns that ransomware attacks will likely prioritise data theft over system encryption, and that AI tools are boosting the speed and sophistication of attacks through automated phishing, fabricated videos and other deceptive tactics.
He urged Ethiopian and other African consumers to remain vigilant, particularly during the festive season and major sporting events, when phishing and smishing scams typically increase. Individuals are advised to verify callers, avoid suspicious links and be alert to scams, while organisations are urged to adopt holistic security strategies that protect operational systems, software development and supply chains.
βAfricaβs digital growth brings enormous opportunity,β he said. βBut we must secure it properly, or attackers will continue to take advantage.β
