February's Adoption Today, with article on moving children to adoption, UEA model. Contributions from @AdoptionWest, foster carers and adoptive parents. FCs said "...there was no sudden cut off from us as we have experienced before, which always seems traumatic for everyone"
9. please take time to watch to Meg and Tom. they are just fab! and my colleague Janet Barker discussing implementation. guidance available in our good practice guide https://t.co/M2Z4tfkQX0 written with Mary Beek and Gillian Schofield and website. https://t.co/BD10AisGRt
8. girls have made great leaps in new family - Meg and Tom feel they have been able to do this because of the TRUST they built with children before they moved in.
7. excellent work too by the social worker - great preparation meant that meg and tom fully understood not just about attachment but also loss - e.g. they noticed the child looking for the (absent) dog under her high chair. SW was there for them to 'lean back on' throughout.
6. shout out to the 'amazing' foster carer who supported the girls emotionally throughout and was 'gentle' with meg and Tom. FC visited the morning after their first night with Meg and Tom, then twice more in first week. the overlap between the two families was about 7 weeks
5. together with FC they worked to create continuity of environment for children - transitional objects, smells, replicating features of FC home- inc the 'grimy blanket' that 'worked wonders' in helping children settle.
3. Meg and Tom visited regularly but did not 'impose' on girls - playful interaction, then learning care routines by observing foster carer. they waited for the children to show a readiness to trust them before each step forward, reading the children's non verbal cues.
