What the names “Odysseus” and “Achilles” mean is fascinating. It reveals the terrifying reality of what a Greek hero is.

• Achilles can be read as ἄχος (grief) + λαός (fighting men) = grief of the fighting men.

• We are told that Odysseus is given the name by his grandfather from ὀδύσσομαι (to hate) = Mr. Hatred.

• The non-ionic pronunciation from which we get Ulysses sounds like οὐλή (scar) which is of course the defining physical feature by which Odysseus is identified. (These are all “folk” etymologies)

The Greek hero is a man of pain and suffering. They cause enormous pain to their rivals: Achilles to Hector and Agamemnon; Odysseus to the Trojans, suitors, and cyclops. But they also cause enormous pain to their friends: Achilles to the Achaeans; Odysseus to his family and the Phaeacians. Lastly, they cause enormous pain to themselves: both lives are riddled with suffering.

While both heroes are men of pain and suffering they are also clearly different. Wily Odysseus is a different archetype than godlike Achilles. So who is the greater hero?

I'm sorry; I still have something to say on this matter. Please, bear with me.

Why do people expect virtue from the poor that the rich lack? Why do we expect restraint from the poor and illiterate that the rich and educated cannot afford?

We've seen rich and educated people throw chairs in the House, we've seen them beat each other up, we've seen them climb the fence and riot, we've seen them kidnap the Mace, we've seen the rich steal like mindless zombies...

All our INEC heads for decades have been professors. Were they incorruptible? Did we not see Honourable Judges suddenly become unable to understand "...and 25 percent in the FCT"?

If learned men with foreign university degrees, who don't have to worry about money or food, still get paid to rig elections, why are we witch-hunting the poor who are getting paid in food and measly stipends?

Don't blame the poor or the illiterate. Blame the system that weaponised disadvantage and greed to its pernicious gain.

Final questions:

If the poor didn't collect Semo and Indomie, do you guarantee that the elections would not be rigged?

Who do you think is more influential in the scheme of rigging: the educated and rich who get luxurious houses and billions, or the illiterate poor who get Semo and Indomie?

This evil system is scapegoating the poor, but they're not the accessories; they are the victims.

Withdraw your sympathies from the corrupt rich people first.
