#Ashenda celebrations continue in various parts of #Tigray, including #Eritrean border, as #Mekelle festival canceled over drone fears

While Tigray authorities canceled the main Ashenda festival gathering in Mekelle over fears of drone attacks, Tigrayan women and girls in various parts of the region, including along the Eritrean border, are continuing to mark the festivities.

In the border area between Tigray and Eritrea, the celebrations brought together residents of Tigray and Eritreans from the neighboring Senafe sub-zone.

Residents of Gulomakeda Woreda and Zalambessa town joined Eritreans from Ambesete Geleba, Serha, Embab Dhan, Kokobay, Endashim, Shimzana and other parts of Senafe for the celebration in Zalambessa, according to a Dimtsi Woyane broadcast.

Speaking at the event today, Eastern Zone Deputy Administrator Hailay Gebremariam said ongoing engagement between Tigrayans and Eritreans should serve peace, development and security for communities on both sides of the border. He said the two peoples share a common history, culture and heritage and have interconnected futures.

Participants quoted by the broadcast said communities on both sides had paid a heavy price for political tensions and called for deepening the emerging peace process and expanding cooperation.

The border-area celebrations contrasted sharply with developments in Mekelle, where regional authorities on Thursday canceled the main Ashenda gathering scheduled for Saturday.

The event, traditionally attended by thousands of young women and girls dressed in traditional finery, was called off over concerns that it could be targeted in drone attacks following a series of strikes in the region. The latest, on Wednesday, reportedly injured at least 14 civilians.

Ashenda celebrations are nevertheless continuing in various parts of Tigray through smaller local gatherings, keeping alive the annual festival that celebrates women and is associated with the Virgin Mary.
