Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has arrived in New Delhi, India, to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, held under the theme: “𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.”

Led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian delegation is expected to engage in bilateral discussions as well on the margins of the Summit.

In this spirit, and in my capacity as the African Union’s Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, I call on Africa’s leaders and youth to embrace technological sovereignty and shape our digital future on our own terms.

The Atlantic must now carry the promise of our future as surely as it carries the memory of our past.

On this CARICOM–Africa Day, one year after our first in-person summit in Addis Ababa, and on the 5th anniversary of the inaugural summit, we have meaningful progress to celebrate.

The opening of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was a powerful reminder of what African determination can achieve. Air Peace is bringing our regions closer. In Barbados, the Afreximbank African Trade Centre at Jemmotts Lane is taking shape, while Ethiopian medical professionals are strengthening care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Ghana secured historic UN recognition of the trafficking and racialised enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity. Togo’s successful UN resolution calls for maps that properly reflect Africa’s size. In Accra, our pursuit of reparations advanced with the establishment of the Global Advisory Panel on Reparatory Justice, on which I am honoured to serve.

These achievements must inspire greater action. There is still much to do to make travel, trade, education and opportunity flow more freely between us.
Too many voices tell us what divides us. We need more voices willing to show what unites us. Across Africa and the Caribbean, I call on our people to embrace this reunion and help build it. Its promise belongs to every one of us.

Across the waters we must build a new passage of possibility, carrying our people, our ideas and our enterprise towards shared prosperity. Built in our own name. Guided by our own vision.

Our ancestors were denied the right to choose their destination. Our duty is to ensure their descendants can shape their destiny.

H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, was received this morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of #Ethiopia @MFAEthiopia by H.E. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Their discussions focused on peace & security issues in the Horn of Africa, as well as on preparations for #COP32, which Ethiopia will host in 2027.

Minister Timothewos @GHessebon & Chairperson Youssouf @ymahmoudali underscored the importance of close coordination between the AU Commission & the host country to ensure the success of this major global climate conference.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos highlighted key continental and global issues in his remarks delivered today at the opening of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

The Minister noted that the session is taking place at a defining moment, as the international order and geopolitical structures are undergoing profound transformation. He observed that geopolitical competition, technological disruption, climate pressures, and growing contestation over strategic resources are shaping a new international dispensation. In this context, he stressed that Africa must seize the opportunity to become a strategic actor capable of providing African solutions to global challenges.

Gedion further stated that the African Union must emerge as a credible voice that advances the continent's priorities and safeguards its interests. Noting that Africa is home to eight of the world's ten fastest-growing economies in 2026, he said the continent is poised to become the engine of global economic growth in the second half of the 21st century. He also reaffirmed Ethiopia's commitment to the African Union and to promoting continental unity and strength.

The Minister emphasized the need for the African Union to secure a sustainable and reliable source of financing to effectively implement its decisions. He also underscored the importance of managing the continent's shared resources for integration and prosperity based on the principles of cooperation, equity, and mutual benefit, and stressed that Africa's challenges should be addressed through African institutions and frameworks.

Gedion further expressed Ethiopia's solidarity with the countries affected by the recent Ebola outbreak in parts of the continent and commended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for its preparedness and response efforts.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, today participated in the 1354th Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa.

During the meeting, Ambassador Hadera underscored the growing threat posed by global terrorist groups to peace and security across the continent. He noted the ability of terrorist groups to exploit emerging technologies, including digital platforms and social media, to recruit members, disseminate propaganda, and spread extremism.

Given the global shifts, he stressed the importance of operationalizing the Africa Standby Force and strengthening the implementation of continental normative frameworks to enhance intra-African cooperation on security and governance.

Ambassador Hadera also highlighted Ethiopia's efforts to combat domestic terrorism and its unparalleled contribution to addressing the scourge of terrorism in the region.

At today’s Meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Peace and Security Council, chaired by Mr. Michael Wamai, Expert, AU PSC COEs Chairperson for July 2026, considered the proposed #AU Model on Trigger Mechanisms for Early Warning and Early Action.
The proposed model seeks to strengthen timely & proportionate #AU responses by establishing clear triggers, thresholds, and response options to address emerging risks before they escalate into violent conflict. It will serve as a decision-support tool for the #AUPSC, linking early warning analysis with preventive action through existing #AU governance & peace and security mechanisms.

This experience offers a great lesson for Ethiopia’s journey toward ensuring unity and lasting peace through dialogue.

Today, the #AU Peace & Security Council convenes its 1353rd meeting to receive an update on the situation in #Abyei. Session  chaired by Amb. @Rotengo2 , #PSC Chairperson for July 2026.
In his introductory statement Comm. @Bankole_Adeoye, @AUC_PAPS, stressed that the #Abyei question extends beyond localized insecurity and has far-reaching implications for regional peace, stability, and conflict resolution. He called for renewed efforts to preserve Abyei’s demilitarized status, revitalize the Joint Oversight Committee, and build on grassroots mediation and traditional dialogue. He further urged the #AfricanUnion, #IGAD, and the #UN to work together on a clear political roadmap to end the current impasse .
