Not all prophets are nice, pleading people. Some are ruthless warriors like Elijah who slaughtered Baal's prophets.

Not all prophets are focused on sins of respectability and idolatry. Some prophets are about calling out injustice against the poor and corruption in high places. #notallprophets #bibhb500

Not all prophets preach with words. Some prophets use their lives to allow God to prophesy through them. Hosea is one of them. Hosea was a living example of the adultery that the people committed against God and God's desire to redeem them.

Care should be taken when reading these texts because they are not play-by-play descriptions of what happened. Rather they are compilations of legends, folk stories, and histories passed down generations to make sense of things within Hebrew culture. #bibhb500

We often read the bible like it's a transcript of a documentary. As if actual footage from events. As we consider the emergence of Israel, we must consider that the stories were written many generations after their purported events. #bibhb500

The marriage/adoption covenant has as principal characteristic the vow. Parties were committing to fidelity, love, respect, trust, & commitment of self to the other. In Hosea, God exclaims to the people that they had broken the marriage covenant by serving other gods. #bibhb500

Covenants seem to be the theme throughout the Hebrew Bible. Central question: How do the Hebrews function in their covenant with God? How does God function in God’s covenant with them? #bibhb500

Divine Charters were covenants where the superior graciously granted status to subordinates. Partners were not co-equal. Gen. 9:8-17, Gen. 15, and 2 Sam. 7 are examples. Ex. Ancient Hittites provided land grants. #bibhb500
