A Guardian report reveals that there are 60,000 Americans living in illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank, as well as some 23,400 Americans serving in the Israeli army. Many are posting videos on social media showing them committing war crimes in Gaza. The US should be prosecuting them, but isn't.
The Guardian ends its report by quoting Oona Hathaway, an academic at Yale Law School: "The US government could prosecute these US citizens if they participate in war crimes. Politically, however, that’s unlikely, for all the obvious reasons.”
"For all the obvious reasons." That's how the article ends.
Wouldn't you just love to see the Guardian and Prof Hathaway explain exactly what those reasons are? But apparently they are so "obvious" the Guardian and an academic at a prestige university feel, as ever, there is no need to put them into words.
Perhaps others will disagree with me, but I don't think you can only respond to these race riots with crackdowns on the far-right.
Poverty, underfunded councils, lack of opportunity and hopelessness *does* contribute to whether disaffected locals will be swept up by organised agitators.
Wolves prey on large hoofed animals like deer, elk, moose, caribou, bison, bighorn sheep + musk oxen. Tetc.
When hunting ungulates, all pack members usually participate in locating and chasing down the prey.
“It’s a scam…The objective isn’t to get the farmers to behave in an organic, responsible, ecologically apposite manner. Far from it. It’s in order to bankrupt the farmers so that their land can be grabbed.”
~ Russell Brand
1. The Home Secretary has no role to play in prosecutorial decisions.
2. Decisions to prosecute are made by the independent Crown Prosecution Service, not MPs.
3. MPs making public declarations seeking to influence live criminal investigations = a bit contempt of court-y.
It is difficult to overemphasise how different the approach this government will have to human rights and rule of law, both substantively and in tone.
Because the transition to a new government in the UK is so sudden, it's not always possible to see the differences immediately.
But a lot is about what came before: the last few governments have done serious damage to:
- The rule of law (prorogation, bypassing of parliament during Covid, Downing Street parties),
- Human rights ( constant drumbeat of negative commentary around the Human Rights Act and European Convention on Human Rights, the culture wars around LGBT+ rights, anti-protest legislation etc)
- the UK's attitude towards certain international institutions and treaties such as the ECHR and Refugee Convention (e.g. the Rwanda policy)
In theory, this should all improve - and could even be reversed.
The new government has come to power on a centre-left agenda, and will not govern like a left wing campaigning organisation, so will disappoint some, but on the issues above I expect there will be a marked improvement.
The appointment of Richard Hermer KC as Attorney General is a sign of things to come, and he will bring a pro-human rights and rule of law approach which has been so missing in recent years.
Today I learned that the oldest living land animal in the world is a gay male tortoise named Jonathan. he is 192 years old, pictured with his longtime mate Fredrick
Happy pride month to the gay turtles 🏳️🌈

He and I recently did this podcast together about his life in the West Bank under the Jordanian and then Israeli occupation; his decision to immigrate to the United States; and what it's like to be a Palestinian in this day and age.
Hamas accepts US ceasefire proposal while Israel uses US bombs to laugh at the US ceasefire proposal. Netanyahu either knows that Biden will roll over or doesn't care, safe in the knowledge that the collective West will let him commit any war crime https://t.co/fKgXxP2zOW
The press cannot hide their glee that the European Parliament is 'freed' of a rare voice of reason who called out the warmongers & the genocide enablers with speeches resonating the spirit of George Bernard Shaw & Bertrand Russell. This is Europe, today.

This is a real loss to women’s rights. I hope another group can take on this important work. Thank you for everything you have achieved; especially giving female prisoners a voice
My rule of thumb: I support everyone’s right to do or believe anything lawful. It doesn’t require me to support what they do or believe. It allows me also to criticise that action or belief without that meaning I want to ban them from such action or belief. They can do same to me
