This is the modern female equivalent of the Murmillo versus Retiarius matchup in gladiator fights.
The reason the Romans had "classes" instead of simply arming every fighter the same, or letting them choose their own wargear, was to create interesting, dynamic fights.
With no shield, a Retiarius was never going to beat a Murmillo in a straight-on brawl. He had to use his mobility, and his net, to outmaneuver the Murmillo.
The Murmillo, meanwhile, had to adapt to the Retiarius; he couldn't simply bull forward the way he might in other matchups.
We see this same sort concept of play and counterplay here.
