Nice to meet you all!
A bit about myself: I have been doing local SEO for the last six years. This account will focus on e-commerce SEO for the family business’ website
2. The mathematics could be made tighter. Comments rightly point out necessary but not sufficient conditions. When pressed, the definition of SEO expands to cover digital PR.
Preface: I read Hobo's guides last year and refer to them in my baseline knowledge repo. I also believe his framework of SEO + AEO are the way to go as a practitioner.
That said, two things can be simultaneously true:
This mathematical formula proves GEO is not a practice separate from SEO and certainly not a new "paradigm" that replaces it. It is not even an evolution of SEO.
It reduces the entire "GEO vs. SEO" debate to a single conditional probability that equals zero:
P( Cited(dᵢ ∈ r) | Rank_R(dᵢ) > K₁ ∨ Rank_F(q, dᵢ) > K₂ ) = 0
In plain English:
- dᵢ ∈ r : Your webpage (dᵢ) being cited inside the AI's generated answer (r).
- Rank_R(dᵢ) > K₁ : Your page fails to rank inside the Stage-1A search engine retrieval pool (K₁), which is governed by classical Technical SEO, PageRank, and domain authority (NSR / siteAuthority).
- ∨ Rank_F(q, dᵢ) > K₂ : OR your passage fails the Stage-1B Cross-Encoder neural re-ranker cutoff (K₂ = 5 in Section 3.1 of Aggarwal et al., 2024, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD '24, DOI: 10.1145/3637528.3671900 / arXiv:2311.09735), which is governed by On-Page SEO, AEO passage alignment, and factual density rather than verbal bloat.
- = 0 : The probability that the LLM even sees your page - let alone cites it - is mathematically 0%.
You cannot "optimize for the generator" when the retriever and re-ranker never let your document into the context window in the first place.

GEO is not a practice distinct from SEO.
Being discovered in ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini or AI Overviews is not GEO.
Mathematically.
@mikesonders@JHTScherck Sounds like ~20 years ago when Apple had just released the iPhone, had an affluent consumer base, and the old guard said "it's a tiny market share, nothing to see here"
