The post concerns Fatima Payman. It should not matter at this point what side of political spectrum you are leaning to - what should matter is how Senator Payman is being treated online and how you react to it - because it speaks to your views on the larger issues of misogyny, racism and hate that have festered in our online communities and have been pushed by the media, public figures and particular politicians towards women.

Senator Payman is expecting a baby and has been posting about the stages of her pregnancy online. She is understandably and naturally excited about the arrival of her child - as most women would be - and wanted to share her news online. Her posts have been inundated with “racist and sexist hate commentary - mainly from white men”.

The world we live in continues to enable these disgusting tirades from malignant and grown-ass puerile men - but you can attract two years’ jail for mentioning something about rivers and seas publicly and online.

This world not only enables hate and racism, it enables and desensitises hate and violence towards women. It allows pathetic individuals like these men to thrive online and in our communities and ALWAYS, ALWAYS exacerbates violence towards women.

This is absolutely not okay. We should be speaking out against all forms of violence and disrespect against women. The abuse aimed at Senator Payman offers us a chance to take a good look at ourselves and do just that. Toxic masculinity is allowed to thrive online unabated.

How would you feel if this was your daughter, wife, sister, mother, another female relative or a friend treated in this way? Would you speak out even if this was a stranger and you knew it was wrong?

This IS hate speech. Why is it not treated as such? This is setting a dangerous precedent. Acceptance of abuse of women is enabling violence.

Hopefully, this signals the end of the constant personal, professional and reputational attacks by these lobby groups over the past several years.

It’s been disheartening to watch both the systematic and coordinated attacks, and the too-frequent institutional capitulation.

We’ve watched as many good Australians from all levels of society and walks of life, from journalists to actors, artists, writers, performers, corporate and countless local community members around the country have paid a very heavy price simply for opposing genocide and apartheid.

Often losing their employment and facing unnecessary hardship, or being smeared with baseless accusations.

This shouldn’t be possible in Australia today and, as a society, we should not have allowed it.

Those organisations that have remained silent, or punished those staff who have rightly spoken up, need to look at their boards, directors and management, and ask, how can this be possible?

Very many of the values statements, mission statements, employee training manuals have been found empty when pressure was applied.

We should all be able to recognise when wrongdoing must be confronted, and have the backbone and principle to do so. And the lives, and professional careers of Australians should never be adversely affected by speaking out against any atrocities, anywhere in the world.

There has been some notable leadership in the past few years, but not nearly enough.

Australia should be better.
