15 years on from NATO’s war of regime change against Libya, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been assassinated, in yet another tragic chapter in the country’s ongoing turmoil.
The forces of Western imperialism, led by Barack Obama, David Cameron and Nicolas Sarkozy, purposefully destroyed Libya, taking advantage of the “Arab Spring” to activate their various proxy forces inside the country (mostly connected to Al-Qaeda militia), create a violent uprising, make up fairy tales about “brutal repression of peaceful protestors”, and build public support in the West for an all-out war.
They hated Libya because of its independent policy, its support for liberation movements around the world, its role in promoting African unity, its plan for a gold-backed African currency, and its success in creating a good standard of living for its people whilst rejecting Washington’s neoliberal consensus.
The Global South loved Libya for the reasons the imperialists hated it. As Nelson Mandela famously remarked, “Those who feel irritated by our friendship with Muammar Gaddafi can go jump in the pool”. And Hugo Chávez, presenting President Gaddafi with a replica of Simón Bolívar’s sword, said: “Gaddafi is for Libya what Bolívar is for us”.
Libya has endured a decade and a half of chaos and devastation, with no obvious end in sight. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was likely the only person that could have united the country; no doubt this is the reason he has been killed.
With Iran facing an escalating threat of war – backed up with economic warfare, destabilisation and demonisation – people around the world should remember the fate of Libya, should remember that the imperialists have a playbook, and refuse to let history repeat itself.
