Between Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, and other initiatives it's hard to imagine anyone who has done more in recent history to advance humanity and improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people than Elon Musk.
@lessin Unfair comparison since New York is actually a good sports town. Also most of the wealth in SF isn’t from there originally where in New York you get some of both.
1) The budgetary impact of military disability fraud is small enough that I’m not worried about it. Non-military disability fraud is a different story.
2) If as Platner argues he was once fully disabled but physical therapy has helped him, he should willingly reduce his disability payment. He clearly is a fully functioning human at this point.
Would love to be a fly on the wall for his first meeting with the Director of the CIA, with his entire background knowledge being the Jason Bourne movies and the first season of the Jack Ryan show.
The core democratic functions of government are national defense, justice, civil liberties, contract enforcement and stable property rights. But it does not follow that all education, science, charity, or poverty reduction must be monopolized by democratic institutions.
Civil society, markets, churches, nonprofits, philanthropists, and voluntary associations can also solve problems.
Democracy is the best system for governing people. That doesn’t automatically make it the best system for allocating every dollar in society.
@JaneAFlegal I’m just not a fan of the over fetishization of democracy. The best schools are not run by democratic governance. While I agree our government should ensure all children get an education, if it is done by philanthropic non-democratic institutions, I won’t lose any sleep over it.
@lxeagle17@SeanTrende@TheArgumentMag If your only goal was to try to give America the most ideological representative Congress that you could, what would you design. Assume you had the votes for passage and the courts wouldn’t object.
@EsotericCD A pen yes but the return envelope is pre-stamped. Just imagine how much better Illinois/chicago government would be if every republican voted in the democratic primary for the more moderate candidate, then voted republican in the general.
