Coast Guard search and rescue teams are attempting to find more victims who may still be alive in the San Francisco Bay after a boat with 20 people on board capsized and sank near Alcatraz Island, officials said.

One victim who was found yesterday died, and 16 passengers were rescued from the chilly waters.

Officials said the group was participating in a celebration of life memorial service when tragedy struck.

Today three people remain missing. This video shows the submerged boat before it sank 120 feet below.

I wanted to share an update on yesterday’s incident in the San Francisco Bay:

As of now, the San Francisco Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard are continuing search and rescue operations for missing individuals. Indications are that there are three people still missing. Search teams are using technology like thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to supports their efforts.

Our first responders have been able to rescue 17 people from the water. Unfortunately, one person did not survive. But the work our first responders have done so far today has been nothing short of heroic, and they are showing incredible courage as their work continues.

I want to thank our Fire Department and Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and our partners from the Oakland Police Department, Tiburon Fire Department, Richmond Police Department, Southern Marin Fire Protection District, and the individuals on private vessels for stepping up to support these efforts.

Thank you to the American Red Cross and the San Francisco Human Services Agency who are assisting those impacted.

This afternoon, there was a boat that sunk in the San Francisco Bay. SFFD, in coordination with SFPD, Oakland PD, and the Coast Guard, responded to the scene right away—so far, they’ve rescued 16 passengers with two people missing and one deceased. My thoughts are with that person’s family, and I am hoping for a quick recovery for all who were affected. Multiple agencies continue to search for those who are missing.

I am grateful for the swift and dedicated work of all of our first responders. And thank our partners for showing up for San Francisco.

What a day! Here’s a quick recap of how I spent One City Day, San Francisco’s first-ever citywide day of service:

🌳 Started by beautifying Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center.
🌱 Planted trees with neighbors in Silver Terrace.
🐶 Made toys for shelter animals with volunteers in the Mission.
🧹 Joined a neighborhood cleanup in Diamond Heights.
🏆 Took part in a friendly competitive trash pickup in Oceanview.
🎉 Wrapped up the day with neighborhood celebrations in Ingleside and the Sunset.

More than 180 projects took place across all 11 supervisorial districts today, helping make San Francisco cleaner, greener, and more welcoming for everyone.

Thank you to my wife, Becca Prowda, for helping launch this initiative, and thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and showed what civic pride looks like.
