@AlyssaKnupp @HeatherLuvsDuke Agreed. While there are many respectful people, I'm rather amazed at the amount of people who don't care at all about being respectful or are just oblivious to the other person when communicating.
@HeatherLuvsDuke I am more motivated to communicate with people of other cultures. Additionally, I'll be less likely to avoid certain conflict if I know the other person's conflict style, because I'll have the tools to resolve the conflict successfully. (2) #CMCIC2019
@HeatherLuvsDuke I've always avoided uncertain situations, therefore often avoided communicating with other cultures. Having knowledge of different communication styles as well as the tools to research the communication styles of different cultures, and knowing my own communicating style well (1)
@molly_hancock21 @HeatherLuvsDuke Generally, I'd completely agree it's contributing to a lack of social skills as were not engaging in those face to face interactions as much.
@molly_hancock21 @HeatherLuvsDuke This is interesting, in my case I've found online communication to help me become less awkward. It allows me to figure out how to communicate "appropriately" so that in person I have more confidence. Its like "practice" for the real deal without the things that trigger my anxiety
@CultureGuy19 @HeatherLuvsDuke I've created many online relationships with people who are very different from me, through one common shared belief or experience. It allows me a feeling of not being so alone, and when that is connected to such a diverse group of people it accentuates how we can relate to
@jennart_29 @HeatherLuvsDuke On the other hand, its very easy to be anyone I want to be, without ever allowing anyone to actually learn anything about who I really am, creating my own identity
@jennart_29 @HeatherLuvsDuke This. I can be all the thing I want to be but cant figure out in face to face conversation, online. I can be whatever I choice to portray, which in some instances had helped me improve on the face to face communications by gaining confidence through online outlets first.
@HeatherLuvsDuke (5) There is even the possibility of believing you are communicating with someone (young, female, educated on the topic being discussed) who may actually be the opposite (older, male, or uneducated on the topic being discussed). #CMCIC2019
@HeatherLuvsDuke (4) On the other hand, the information we see and the communication we participate in online is very subjective, it may not represent the culture accurately or broadly. #CMCIC2019
@HeatherLuvsDuke (3) For example, I have had to opportunity to communicate with people online from different cultures and backgrounds Iβd otherwise never encounter, through a common experience of having lost a child. #CMCIC2019
@HeatherLuvsDuke (2) It allows us to keep in touch with people we may otherwise have lost all contact with, and the biggest plus I think is it gives us the opportunity to connect with all sorts of different people with one strong similarity, belief, or value. #CMCIC2019
@HeatherLuvsDuke (1)I do believe online communication can facilitate intercultural communications because it allows us a means to communicate with people from cultures we may have otherwise never had the opportunity to communicate with. #CMCIC2019
@jakobatticus @HeatherLuvsDuke This is exactly what my comment was an example of, worded much better than I did. However I was taking on an identity to reject how I was perceived based on popular culture.
@DeannaU16 @HeatherLuvsDuke I was shocked at how under shared this was! And nobody seemed concerned? I posted it all over facebook with no reply's or shares, when usually I have an opposite response when I share current events.
@HeatherLuvsDuke (2) I dyed my hair blue and bought a bunch of clothing from Hot Topic. I took on this identity for several years in response to popular culture and the way Iβd be perceived by those in Nebraska. #CMCIC19
@HeatherLuvsDuke I have a personal example from when I was in middle school. I went to visit my aunt in Nebraska. Being from San Diego, I was expected to be a blonde surfer girl and I was expecting a ton of questions, so in response to not wanting to be perceived that way... #CMCIC19
