TOTAL RECALL was released 34 years ago today. The second-most expensive film ever at the time, and among the most popular of Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the story behind the scenes is as bonkers as what we see on the screen…

MEMENTO was released 24 years ago this week. Acclaimed by experts as one of cinema's greatest explorations of memory, and the film that catapulted the career of Christopher Nolan, the making of story is one you won't forget…

A nice thing about being an experienced writer (read: old as f***) is that you can quickly break story. A disadvantage is that you often feel yourself reaching into the Big Bag of TV Writer Tropes to do it. As writers, how do we avoid the familiar & cliché & keep things fresh?
@GunnerGale The future rolls toward us like a dark highway at night. For the first time, I face it with a sense of hope. That if a Terminator can learn the value of human life… maybe we can, too 👌🏼
@mikeryan He was fine chatting beyond GT till questions started to imply his career between D9 & GT didn’t live up to what his first film was. Then bringing up Alien was salt on the wound. U just didn’t read him well after D9 tone-shift. Shouldn’t have pivoted to Alien & instead back to GT
@gregsilverman Totally. Rewatched it last week. The heart really sneaks up on you in the end. It’s not easy to pull off blatantly stating the theme of the film in the climax, and having it feel earned and landing the emotion. This one does. And the denouement is so adorable and satisfying.
I’ve been asked throughout my career - what makes someone successful in entertainment. A few years ago, I came up with 4 vectors that I think are the key factors in answering this question.
@stampedeventures we have highlighted these and we hire and evaluate employees based on them.
They are Hustle, Taste, Follow Through and Manners. I will describe each in more detail below.
#Screenwriting did not start out w/any “rule” other than to tell an effective story.
Somewhere along the lines, some “analysts” noted what tended to work for domestic audiences and BOOM! The holy three-act structure, the inciting incident required to occur by page whatever…
@GunnerGale The climax still brings me to tears: “I love you …. wife.” And the tension with the glo light that can’t distinguish the color of the wires. Brilliant! What an incredible undertaking that production must’ve been. So grateful you lead the charge & made such a wonderful film.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE is excellent, too. What a moment we are having in theaters right now. I hope everyone is appreciating it.
I absolutely adored working with McQuarrie and Cruise on EDGE OF TOMORROW. They put so much love and effort into that film. We shot and reshot and reshot and edited and reshot and brainstormed and reshot and edited and reshot. Everyone was tireless. Emily Blunt was incredible. Doug Liman always had ‘one more idea’. I think the result is a really special movie.
I see similar love and giving in MI. There is so much ‘movie’ there.
I also love seeing Tom (and Chris) visiting the movie theaters around the world. I can tell you Tom Cruise REALLY cares about delivering an exceptional experience for all of us. In theaters.
Something else you all should know - there is something really special about Hollywood that Chris McQ was on both sides of - artists helping each other (without expecting fees or credit!) Guillermo helped us with the Edge Of Tomorrow monster concepts. McQuarrie helped Andy Davis (and us at WB) with the end of PERFECT MURDER, etc. There is a sense of camaraderie and community in our space that is rarely discussed, but incredibly powerful (and moving to me). On your journeys, help each other, read drafts of your friends’ work, go to cuts of your friends’ films and share notes fearlessly, PA on a Friend’s’ short film for free, offer someone office space if you have room, etc.
EXCLUSIVE: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale https://t.co/7P1uEyiws1
@TrungTPhan Tom Cruise’s whole career has been a string of commercial and/or critical hits. It’s an astounding, unmatched run with very few misses. Cage started around the same time as TC, had a decent run starting in mid-90s, then lost his stride. I agree w your thesis on these 4 films tho
Early in my screenwriting career, I was insecure, hungover, and a pain to work with.
I sobered up & wanted to change my reputation, but didn't know how. Then Craig Mazin gave a talk at the WGA on thriving in development.
These are 5 takeaways that helped change how I worked.
@TrungTPhan Dennis Muren of ILM is the unsung hero of CGI revolution. He conceived first CGI character in Young Sherlock Holmes. Spearheaded the VFX in The Abyss & Terminator 2, all which made Jurassic Park possible. He made Cameron & Spielberg look like geniuses (and made them a lot of $$$)
