The Namibian Police have confirmed that the human skeletal remains discovered in the Satanslog area, west of Otjomuise, are those of Liyambo Beatus “Tuna” Kashanu, who was reported missing in January this year.

Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the identification, following forensic examinations conducted on the remains.

Kashanu went missing shortly after arriving in Windhoek from Onakaheke village.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are continuing.

16-Year-Old Shimuwaafeni Honoured as Hero

Sixteen-year-old Cornelius Tulotokela Shimuwaafeni of Omutundungu village in the Omusati Region has been conferred Hero Status by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for saving the lives of nine-month-old twins.

Shimuwaafeni rescued the twins after they were thrown into a water pond on 17 May 2026, risking his own life in the process.

The citation read during the 60th commemoration of Heroes Day said Cornelius acted without hesitation, cameras or the expectation of recognition or reward. He saw lives in danger and acted.

When asked what he would have done if the children were going to die, Cornelius reportedly answered: “I was going to die with them.”

Ndaitwah highlighted his actions as an example of true heroism and challenged Namibians to reflect on who is a hero in today’s Namibia.

The recognition comes with an award of N$200,000. Minister of Finance, Ericah Shafudah, said the government is in discussions to establish a trust for Cornelius.

Dignitaries attending the Heroes Day ceremony also donated money to the young hero in recognition of his bravery and selfless act.

N$200 000 REWARD: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has officially conferred a hero status on 16-year-old Kornelius Tulotokela Shimuafeni for his courageous rescue of nine-month-old twins who had been thrown into a pond.

Shimuafeni, a grade 7 learner from Omutundungu village in the Etayi Constituency, rushed into the pond on 16 May 2026 and saved the drowning babies, Victoria Kaleinasho Shikulo and Vilho Mandume Shikulo. The children were allegedly thrown into the water by their mother, who was subsequently arrested.

In recognition of his bravery and selfless act, Shimuafeni was also awarded N$200 000.

Coffins containing 84 ancestral remains are on display at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town ahead of a formal rehumanisation ceremony this morning.

The ceremony is scheduled to start at 10:00.

Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture Dr Sanet Steenkamp and South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie will officiate at the ceremony.

The remains are expected to be formally handed over as part of the repatriation process, which will culminate in their return to Namibia.

In a birthday message, Nandi-Ndaitwah described Pohamba as a living witness to Namibia’s national journey, from the liberation struggle to Independence and the consolidation of democracy. She also praised his contribution to national unity, reconciliation and democratic governance.

A 33-year-old man died after his 16-year-old nephew allegedly hit him with a brick during a fight over food at a homestead in Onankali Village in the Oshikoto Region on Sunday evening.

This was confirmed by Oshikoto Police Regional Commander Commissioner Ndafudha Iifo on Monday.

“It is alleged that the victim and suspect were arguing about food at their homestead, chasing each other, followed by a fight, which led to the suspect hitting the victim with a brick on the head,” Iifo said.

The victim was declared dead on arrival at Onankali Health Clinic.

The victim and suspect allegedly reside at the same homestead.

The suspect is a Grade 8 learner at a school in the same area. He was taken to social workers before appearing in court, police say.
