**Spoilers**
#Kaantha is my kinda film - a dialogue heavy drama, showcasing an ego tussle between guru and protégé, cinema within cinema, old world film sets, clothes, vehicles and charm, finally ending like a whodunit ❤️.

Selvamani Selvaraj weaves a stirring tale of deceit and deception, hooking the audience into the 1950s world, which has been beautifully set up by his technicians.

T Ramalingam's set works are amazing. Camerawork by
Spaniard Daniel Sanchez Lopez is exemplary. Editing by Llewellyn Anthony Gonzales is good, though the runtime could have been trimmed to make the film crisper. Sound design is also excellent. Songs by Jhanu Chanthar are hummable. But it's Jakes Bejoy's background score that trumps all these, it's an absolute beast on its own! My only other grouse was the VFX, especially the shots outside the studio, that seemed a little lazily done.

While the film is technically brilliant, it's the acting that raises it to the next level. DQ's TKM is charming & sauve, and he nails the old world look and body language. There's this innocence in his eyes, which can also be deceptive. He gives this role his all, and can proudly name it as one of his top performances.

Samutharikani is a top class actor, and he proves that with another solid role. A director who wants his protégé to succeed, but on his terms. How this character trait plays havoc in the lives of people around him is basically the crux of the story. It's a difficult role, which he did with elan.

Bhagyashri Borse gets one of the meatiest female roles in a while, and she hits the ball out of the park, making the character her own. She looks the part, ethereal like those yesteryear actresses, having this aura around her that cannot be explained. She's got beautiful expressive eyes that says a lot, most of the emotions that she has, coming out through them. Hope she gets more roles like these where she can portray her acting skills!

Rana Daggubati as a Police detective is actually probably the sore thumb of the film. Though he did his part well, his jovial manner of investigating a serious murder case just didn't land for me. The shift in emotions of the storytelling definitely didn't work, it broke that flow. Though the film ends well, the 2nd half does have its flaws.

We must commend DQ the producer also over here. He has been regularly backing out of the box and risky projects. And he's trying to do different and difficult roles as he progresses in his career, maybe taking a leaf out of his dad's book. Probably also the reason why doesn't do a lot of films, maybe trying to be choosy. We must give the guy a break, at least for trying to be a clutter breaker.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, and expecting mass masala would be a mistake. Kaantha is not a flawless film, but it's layered making and top class performances makes it one of the best films for me this year!
