We call for urgent reform of the international financial architecture so that debt does not come at the expense of children and their future.

Debt becomes a children’s rights issue when interest payments crowd out investment in classrooms, healthcare, nutrition and social protection. Fiscal responsibility must protect these foundations of future prosperity.

Kenya is pursuing responsible fiscal management and stronger domestic resource mobilisation while continuing to invest in our people. But national action must be matched by a global financing system that expands affordable and concessional finance, deploys guarantees and risk-sharing instruments to mobilise capital, resolves unsustainable debt faster and reduces dependence on debt.

Addressed the UNICEF-convened High-Level Dialogue on Debt, Development and the Next Generation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Pleased to hold an initial meeting with the China Africa Business Council @cabcbeijing, under the UNICEF China–CABC partnership MOU, to explore how Chinese businesses operating across Africa can be better connected with development opportunities that advance results for children and young people. Our discussion focused on practical areas of synergy in Kenya, including stronger private-sector engagement, skills transfer, technical and vocational training, green economy pathways, and sustainable agriculture as routes to learning, employability, and livelihoods.

It was a privilege to host @FCDOMattBaugh, British High Commissioner to Kenya, and Deputy High Commissioner, Diana Dalton, for constructive exchange on evolving development landscape.

We discussed the shifting shape of development cooperation, the hard trade-offs it forces, and most importantly how partners can think differently, not just do more with less.

For children, the question is not whether we adapt, but how quickly and how creatively.

Some stories only get better with time.

Two years ago, we took you behind the scenes of the viral photo of Lionel Messi and a baby Lamine Yamal with his mom. This iconic image was captured for a fundraising calendar supporting UNICEF and the FCB Foundation.

Now, this story has a new chapter. Last month, Lamine Yamal became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, joining Lionel Messi, who was served in this role since 2010.

This weekend, they'll face each other in the FIFA World Cup final, but when it comes to championing children's rights, they're on the same team.

In 2007, a photograph for one of our charity calendars brought together two people that no one imagined would share this story.

19 years later, #LeonMessi and #Lamine Yamal meet again. This time, in a #WorldCup2026 final. And both as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors.

On Sunday, they will wear different jerseys. They will defend different colors. They will compete for the same dream.

Great meeting with Ambassador Philip Thigo @pthigo & his team to exchange ideas on how #Africa can help shape a safer, more inclusive digital future for children. From online child safety to responsible #AI and digital inclusion, children’s rights must remain at the heart of digital transformation.

As co-chairs of the Africa Child Online Protection Taskforce, #UNICEF and #GSMA provide a continental platform for #Kenya to help advance child-centred AI governance and strengthen Africa’s agenda on children and AI.

It was an honour to speak to the @TurkanaAssembly on “Strong Systems, Strong Futures: Delivering for Every Child in Turkana”. The ongoing MoU with the @TurkanaAssembly reflects our collaboration on strategic legislative frameworks and strengthened oversight responsibility.

It truly takes a whole village to build strong foundations for the well-being of children and women in remote areas. The school’s efforts to bring more than 200 children back to school earlier this year are commendable, ensuring they are not deprived of their right to education.

Established in 1932, #Lodwar Mixed Primary School is one of #Turkana County’s oldest integrated boarding primary schools and has been a longstanding @UNICEFKenya partner since its establishment. The school currently serves 1,967 learners—1,100 girls and 867 boys—supported by 31 teachers, drawing children from Lodwar town, rural Turkana and urban informal settlements.

Its integrated model enables learners with disabilities, including those with visual impairment, to learn and play alongside their sighted peers, supported by the county’s only Education Assessment and Resource Centre and UNICEF’s partnership with the @EduMinKenya, the Directorate of Special Needs and KISE through the Lego Braille Bricks initiative funded by the @LEGOfoundation With support from German NATCOM, the school re-enrolled approximately 200 learners in 2026, aided by adequate classrooms, water and boarding facilities.

Further investment in boarding infrastructure, a dedicated ICT lab, sustained internet connectivity under @EUinKenya support, and fencing would strengthen retention, digital learning and learner safety.
