Tactical Tuesday ⚽️
One of our key sub-principles in possession is to pass and move forward, either to receive the ball back directly or as a 3rd/4th man.
Why is this important to us?
By continuing our movement after the pass, we can lose our marker, arrive in new spaces, and create opportunities to penetrate defensive lines rather than remaining static.
Clip 1:
Our centre-back receives from a wide area, plays forward, and continues his run. By staying connected to the attack, he arrives as the free 4th man, receives possession, and plays a through ball for the full-back to deliver the cross.
Clip 2:
Our winger receives wide, drives inside, and combines with the midfielder before making an aggressive run into the box. He then receives the layoff and finishes the move with a shot.
While the focus is on passing-and-moving forward actions, a number of our previously discussed principles are still visible:
• Speed-ups and changes of tempo
• Fluidity and interchange of positions
• Arriving in the box with numbers
Different actions. Same principles. Creating advantages through movement.
"Intensity is our identity" is a principle that echoes throughout our training sessions, and this moment captures it perfectly.
Whilst out of possession in the middle phases, our objective is to move collectively with the ball, reducing space, and overwhelming the opposition through coordinated pressure.
➡️ As the ball is played wide, the entire team shifts across together to lock the opposition onto one side of the pitch.
➡️ All three units remain compact both vertically and horizontally, limiting passing options and space between the lines.
➡️ The nearest player applies immediate pressure, while others position themselves to support, cover, and jump at the desired moment.
➡️ Upon regaining possession, we play a pass forward quickly and exploit the space left behind the opposition's defensive line.

In over 10 years of coaching and analysis, I genuinely haven’t come across a piece of work with this level of detail and clarity. Every single phase has been broken down meticulously — from in-possession structures to how Liverpool adapt in different zones of the pitch against different pressing types.
An unbelievable piece of analysis and a real benchmark for tactical detail. Outstanding work from a brilliant mind.
Do give it a read and share feedback with my dear friend @thehalfspaces
TACTICAL ANALYSIS REPORT - Liverpool 2025-26 🔴
I have done a deep dive looking at Liverpool's In Possession and Out of Possession principles for this season.

One of our key attacking principles is to overload one side to free up the other.
In the first clip, we switch play to the left winger who holds the ball until support arrives. As the opposition shifts across, the far-side full back becomes the free player and attacks the space with an early cross to finish the action.
Our players have the freedom to interchange positions; here, the winger moves inside, which opens the flank for the overlapping full back. This gives us variety in our attacking play.
In the second clip, we apply the same principle differently. We keep the ball on the right side longer before finding the free left back on the opposite side. Although the goal was not scored, the principle remains the same.

A few of our in possession principles/sub principles are as follows:
1) We want positional fluidity with players occupying different spaces constantly to create new pictures and different problems for the opposition
In these sequences:
* Tufail (24) drops from the left wing into deeper central areas to help progression
* The winger holds width while the full-back underlaps
* In the second clip, the rotations happen differently; same principle, different occupation of space
2) Attack depth whenever there is time and space on the ball; underlaps, overlaps & runs in behind
3) Arrive in the box with energy and intensity
Both clips showcase different movements, but the overall idea/objectives remain the same; to arrive in the box with energy and intensity.

I hate this post so much. He knows exactly what he's doing. Throwing the manager under the bus for the second time this season, when we've needed unity and togetherness more than ever.
Would've been better if he had delivered on the pitch as usual, rather than this nonsense.
One of our key in-possession principles is encouraging the opposition to press in numbers so we can deliberately create artificial transition moments — turning controlled build-up into dynamic 4v4s and 5v5s higher up the pitch.
In this sequence, the opposition presses in a 4-3-3 against our 3-4-3 diamond structure. Their striker locks onto our CDM, wingers stay close to our outside centre-backs, and our midfield three are tightly man-marked.
The objective was to manipulate pressure, not avoid it.
Our centre-back carries forward to provoke the first line. An attacking midfielder drops toward the ball to attract attention, but the opposition initially refuse to jump. The CB remains patient, holding possession until the striker finally commits to the press. That trigger allows us to recycle through the goalkeeper and immediately access the free CDM.
Once facing forward, the CDM drives into space, forcing an opposition midfielder to step out. That movement opens the passing lane to our attacking midfielder between the lines — followed by a through ball and an immediate acceleration to attack the final line.

A bit late but a quick update. Honoured to have represented 🇵🇰 at the saff u20 championship as an asst. coach. Grateful for the lessons and the people who made it special. The learning journey continues.

Down but never out. An absolute privilege to be part of a group that’s taught me far more than football — resilience, ownership, trust, and fighting for something bigger than yourself. The good football is just a bonus which i get to see every other day, its the life lessons that will stay forever. Eternally greatful to these gentlemen and the beautiful game
