I’m planning a Cooperstown trip with my high school staff. I’ve become a bit of a nerd when it comes to the history of the game.
Here are 10 pitching lines/stats you maybe remember but haven’t thought of in a while.
Study the game. It’s bigger than you. 👊
For starters…
@BaseballDudes48 I would say base running. At a young age, kids are just taught to steal every pitch with no general understanding of how to take leads or what to look for in a pitcher’s delivery. 2 out leads at 2B vs 0/1 out. Simply taking a good route out of the box on for sure base hits
@CardinalsYoshi@raider_ep That’s why you charge 1B and SS goes to 1B to cover. Also run pick at 2nd with SS on this play. Not sure why they keep SS where he is
I asked ChatGPT what would Barry Schwartz (author of Practical Wisdom) say about the cultural war in baseball. The claim was....this isn't a war on youth sports it's a war of maximization!!!
A Beginner's Mindset is such a super power.
#SchoolToo
@BaseballDudes48 Makes you miss the days of scoring by hand when no one else knew. I do remember guys going up to the kid keeping the book in HS to find out how he scored it but parents never knew
@BaseballDudes48 As a former HS coach I talk about this a lot. I think about the times you get on a guy for taking a called 3rd strike when many times it probably was unhittable. The more that I watch games from behind home plate or from a press box, I now see how much more than than the river
We are overstimulated and we don't even notice. Netflix while eating. Reels in the bathroom. Music while cooking. Podcasts on walks. We consume by default, not by intention. You keep filling every gap, then wonder why you feel foggy and unmotivated. Boredom and silence are the real growth drivers. They give you space to think and create. That's when solutions show up for problems that have been stuck for months. Leave some room.
We've got a youth mental health epidemic.
Part of the reason? Without being aware of it, adults are training kids to have hypersensitive threat alarms, without the tools or resources to handle any sort of challenge.
The consequences are dire:

When we were kids, play meant freedom.
No adults, no schedules, no supervision: just scraped knees, bad calls, and fun until the street lights came on.
That chaos built confidence.
Today, we’ve traded it for structure and safety...and our kids’ mental health is paying the price.
What happens to a generation that never climbs too high, falls too hard, or has to navigate conflict with peers?
A quarter of young men in America (15-34) feel lonely.
Higher than the national average and higher across nearly 40 other high income countries.
My advice?
Start talking to more people, including strangers. Strike up convos. Say hello and good morning. Interact with cashiers, baristas, waiters/bartenders, people you see at the gym etc.
I guarantee that it will put you in a better mood. You'll feel more connected, less lonely, and you may even be surprised where some of these random convos lead too (e.g. business relationships, friendships, romantic relationships etc. ).
