We were filled with joy during our recent visit to the Kano State Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Development when we saw a new building being constructed in honour of Sarki Muhammadu Rumfa (1463–1499 AD). Only a few months earlier, another had been built and named after Sarki Ali Yaji (1349–1385 AD).

These developments are deeply significant because both rulers along with their predecessors and successors are often mistakenly referred to as Sarakunan Maguzawa (non-believers), even within the Kano Palace. In truth, they were the very architects of the Islamic and cultural foundations upon which modern Kano stands, yet immortalised.

Sarkin Kano Ali Yaji Dan Tsamiya (1349–1385) was the first to formally establish Kano as an Islamic Emirate after Islam was declared the state religion around 1350, according to interpretations of the Kano Chronicle (1946, p. 12).

Meanwhile, Muhammadu Rumfa (1463–1499) is celebrated as perhaps the greatest Sarki in Kano’s history. His reign ushered in sweeping reforms and innovations that continue to define the city’s identity today. Among his many contributions:
1.He formally established Sharia as Kano’s legal framework.
2.He was the first to appoint a Chief Imam of Kano.
3.He founded the Council of Elders (Tara Kano) to advise on governance.
4.He introduced royal regalia such as turbans and ceremonial robes to distinguish rulers from subjects.
5.He organized Kano’s governance under district heads (Hakimai), a system still in use today.
6.He built Kurmi Market, positioning Kano as a thriving hub of West African trade with Borno and Gwanja.
7.He established Qur’anic schools across the city, spreading literacy, knowledge, and Islamic faith.
8.He constructed the Emir’s Palace (Gidan Rumfa) and completed the expansion of Kano’s city walls begun by Sarki Gijimasu.
9.Under his rule, Kano reached its zenith in prosperity, scholarship, and innovation, strengthened by trade and diplomatic ties across regions.

I was at the fueling station earlier today. While on the queue, the NAPEP man beside me also on queue to the same pump was on call with his wife.

His phone had rang twice before he eventually picked-up. His wife mentioned that he didn’t drop any money for the children to eat, and in response, he reminded her that he already told her he wanted to use the money left with him to buy fuel into his Keke so that he can work and send her some money. The call was audible as it was on speaker.

The worried wife kept mentioning that the children were already crying of hunger. But he kept telling his wife that he would send money immediately he starts commuting.

After the call, he was speaking to himself and talking about how people weren’t commuting as normal these days. With his eyes fixated on his keke.

I was so bothered for him, his wife and the hungry children.

When we got to the pump, the attendant could either sell to me or him as we were beside each other due to the position of our fuel tanks.

And he told the pump attendant to sell for me. I immediately told the attendant to sell for him.

“Oya, sell One thousand two hundred own”, he said.

While he stretched his hand to give the attendant the money.

Then I said to the young lady, Please fill the tank of his keke”.

He looked at me like, "No, she shouldn’t" as he doesn’t have that amount of money to pay.

I told him not to worry, and that I will pay.

And he said, "since I started driving this keke, I have never bought a full tank".

With tears on his eyes, he went down and I carried him up.

After I bought mine and as I was driving out of the staton, I didn’t know he was waiting for me just outside the gate.

When I saw him, I stopped and he couldn’t stop thanking me.

I simply told him that I had overheard his call with his wife which got me very emotional.

My parents taught me how to be kind to people. My Dad would say, "a help you render today is coming for you tomorrow".

One thousand two hundred can not feed husband and wife, let alone with the children.

I requested for his account details and sent him money. I equally asked him to call his wife and I spoke with her. When she sent her details, I sent her money to buy some foodstuff.

He was literally in tears as I drove off, and I prayed for them that God eases their burden.

And the one reason why I share this— If life is kind to you, Please extend it and be kind to other people.

Functioned to accommodate knowledge transfer in support of the local production of pharmaceutical excipients, active pharmaceutical ingredients (#APIs), and advanced dosage forms such as inhalers, extended-release medications, and dermatological patches, Empower Academy Nigeria will advance best practice in process engineering, regulatory compliance, quality control, environmental monitoring, and other important fields.

With a mandate and capacity to train and upskill up to 2,000 Nigerian professionals annually, supported by cutting-edge equipment and world-class facilities, Empower Academy Nigeria, @EmpowerGRP, will offer certification courses in partnership with Africa CDC @AfricaCDC, the World Health Organization (@WHO), UN Institute for Training and Research (@UNITAR), and the International Federation of Pharmacists, @FIP_org, amongst others.
