The settlements being destroyed are among the densely populated areas of the city. This is an efficient use of land: no six-lane roads leading to them, no huge streets for cars, small businesses operate within these settlements, water is managed with great care, and they are solar-powered and self-managed. What is a better use of land for housing? These demolitions make zero economic or social sense. It seems the only consideration is to push the working and middle classes out of the capital. #StopIslamabadEvictions

Federal Constitutional Court directs CDA to finalize katchi abadi regulations
Islamabad,
All-Pakistan Alliance for Katchi Abadis, The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan HRCP), National Commission for Justice and Peace, Awami Workers Party, Aurat March Islamabad & orger civil society organisations have conditionally welcomed the decision made by the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Thursday to uphold a stay order against summary evictions of informal settlements while urging an immediate halt to ongoing demolition drives in Bari Imam, Allama Iqbal Colony G7 and many other katchi abadis across Islamabad. They further noted that the superior court must hold CDA and ICT officials to account for repeatedly violating the moratorium on summary evictions.
A two-member FCC bench comprising Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Arshad Shah expressed displeasure at the inordinate delay in development and approval of katchi abadi regulations on the part of CDA. He directed the CDA to consult and take input from all relevant stakeholders before finalizing and approving the policy by the time of the next hearing within 4 weeks.
The counsel appearing on behalf of katchi abadi dwellers Faisal Siddiqui noted that it is the statutory duty of CDA under the CDA Ordinance 1960 to make schemes for slumdwellers and either regularize or resettle katchi abadis and informal settlements.
HRCP and its allied organisations are increasingly alarmed at the CDA's willful suppression of the fundamental rights of over 4.5 lac residents of Islamabad who have already seen their homes demolished or are face the imminent risk of eviction and called upon the courts to not only compensate thousands of displaced families but also restrain the authorities from undertaking any further evictions.
