Climate scientists have warned that a “Super El Niño” climate cycle is developing in the South Pacific – the strongest in more than a century. In capitalist-owned media outlets like the Washington Post and New York Times, the catastrophic consequences of Super El Niños like this one and others in the late 19th century, are being reported like they’re natural phenomena. Little reference is made to the historical and colonial man-made effects that have greatly contributed to the climate crises working people experience today.

The people in power are trying to prepare us for a seemingly unavoidable mass death and suffering across the Global South. While they attempt to wash their hands of any responsibility, we have to understand that climate catastrophe is not the root cause of such disasters. Capitalism itself is.

Trayvon Martin and I were born in the same year. We were both juniors in high school when he was killed. Hearing the story of his murder at the hands of a racist vigilante and seeing him demonized by the media left a deep impact on me. It is one of the reasons why I am a socialist fighting for a whole new system.

Racist violence is baked into the capitalist system — the rich have used racism as a tool to exploit Black and Brown people, and to keep us all divided and powerless. We are strongest when we fight injustice together. Today's multiracial movement against ICE terror is proof of that.

Greg Bovino, the top Border Patrol official who has become synonymous with the racist mass deportation campaign, is being pulled out of the Twin Cities.

Without a doubt, this is a result of the historic mass movement that swept Minnesota, culminating in last Friday’s general strike. But we need to be clear — this fight isn’t about any one individual, it’s about ending mass deportations once and for all!

ICE, CBP and the other federal agencies unleashed on the country are brutal and racist because of their role in society, not just who leads them. They exist to carry out a racist campaign to expel people from the country who far right politicians like Trump consider “incompatible with western civilization”. And as we have seen in the Twin Cities, they are willing to use deadly violence against people who stand with their immigrant neighbors. The struggle must continue!

BT has confirmed anti-ICE high school walkouts in eight states, with organizers in Minnesota, Georgia and Ohio expecting it to be the largest day of student action yet.
