In response to the rally, @ACSOSheriffs said in a statement that they too are frustrated by the continued deaths at the jail and are working to make the facility safer and to rebuild trust with the community.
Members of the Care First Community Coalition rallied at Santa Rita Jail today calling the County to establish independent civilian oversight of the sheriff’s department—four people have died in the jail since the start of the year. @KQEDnews
Alameda County has taken some steps towards making this happen.
In 2021, the county passed the Care First, Jails Last Resolution which commit the county to relying on healthcare to address mental illness instead of incarceration.
