There’s a new breed of smart, educated and professional ministers in charge of the new Nepal government, and Mr Wagle, an economist by profession, typifies the breed. One region. Shared challenges. Collective action for adaptation.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region is increasingly experiencing severe and interconnected impacts of climate change. From changing precipitation and glacier and snow melt to floods, landslides, communities across the HKH region are facing complex and interconnected risks.

To address these challenges, the second Hindu Kush Himalaya Parliamentarians’ Meet 2026 started today in Thimphu, Bhutan. Bringing together parliamentarians from across the region to strengthen political commitment, share experiences and advance collective action on one of the most urgent challenges facing the Hindu Kush Himalaya: climate adaptation.

The inauguration highlighted the critical role of parliamentarians in turning climate commitments into action - through stronger policies and legislation, greater investment in adaptation, and ensuring that the needs of vulnerable communities are reflected in national development priorities.

Over the next two days, parliamentarians will explore how countries can strengthen adaptation finance, connect science and policy, promote locally led solutions and deepen regional cooperation. As climate risks transcend national borders, collaboration across the HKH is essential to building resilience from the mountains to downstream communities.

This meet is being organised by the Parliament of Bhutan, the Royal Government of Bhutan with support from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) through its Himalayan Resilience Enabling Action Programme (HI-REAP) and Adaptation at Altitude Programme.

Local governments are stepping up efforts to strengthen climate resilience.

Roshi Rural Municipality and Dhankuta Municipality have committed to integrating HI-CAS activities into municipal priorities and plans, helping build local ownership and support for adaptation efforts that benefit vulnerable communities.

The commitment was formalised today through Letters of Intent signed with ICIMOD and CEAPRED.

🎓ICIMOD-recommended candidates awarded the 2026 CAS-ANSO Scholarship

Candidates nominated by ICIMOD, an Alliance of International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO) member, have been selected for the 2026 CAS-ANSO Scholarship.

ICIMOD colleagues Arti Govinda Shrestha and Ramesh Kathariya will pursue PhDs in Physical Geography at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research and in Ecology at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, respectively.

The ANSO promotes international scientific cooperation and capacity development. The CAS-ANSO Scholarship supports postgraduate education and research training at institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Wishing them to make meaningful contributions to regional environmental protection, sustainable mountain development, and international scientific cooperation.
