Today, Danielle Smith continued her pursuit of absolute power by appointing a party insider to what must be an impartial position in our democracy. It’s one of the most inappropriate decisions she’s made and reeks of the kind of Toryland cronyism she once complained about.
The Ethics Commissioner should have no previous political ties to the parties that make up the government of Alberta or the Official Opposition. Appointing Shawn McLeod, a man with deep Conservative roots, a long donation history and an attempt to run for the UCP for office in 2019, as Alberta’s new Ethics Commissioner is a move all Albertans should be enraged about.
By appointing a party insider to what should be an impartial position in our democracy, Danielle Smith has shown Albertans they should not have any confidence in the independence of this legislative officer. She’s also told Albertans they should have no faith in the administration of the Conflict of Interest Act. And therefore, all subsequent UCP decisions should be viewed through that lens.
This appointment is next level hypocrisy from Danielle Smith who as Leader of the Wildrose Opposition said her party would not provide their MLA financial information to a PC-appointed Ethics Commissioner.
What is clear and disturbing is Danielle Smith’s relentless pursuit of control over the police, Albertans' pensions, health-care decisions, the Ethics Commissioner, and even Elections Alberta is not about what’s best for Albertans. It is about this premier’s pursuit of authoritarian power.
@AdrianaLaGrange@albertamidwives This is fantastic. We had a midwife, with a hospital delivery, for our now 1 year old and are so grateful for the care they provided
@hellsnahsis@loewinsky@RachelNotley Albertans are generally very anti-tax. So if our province is unwilling to implement a PST, we need to do something. It costs money to maintain parks, so I have no problem pitching in.
@RachelNotley It’s only $15 a day per car. We pay a fee for national parks. I think that having an exception for low income Albertans make sense but those of us that can pay, can pay.
@mastermaq@AlexandraHryciw Living and working downtown, I feel I can confidently say that having officers downtown more “just in case” would be a great thing for safety.
@EdFuller_PSU It’s such a sham. Additionally, so much research is publicly funded but costs way too much money to access if you aren’t IN academia or a student at a University. Publicly funded but not accessible by the public.
