Changaiz Sahir was a poet of the people, a publisher of hope, and a helping hand for the needy. His disappearance is a wound that demands answers. We will not be silent. #ReleaseChangaizSahirBaloch#StopEnforcedDisappearances
Changaiz Sahir, director of Ilm-o-Adab, was forcibly abducted by intelligence agency on July 21, 2025, and his whereabouts remain unknown. This is part of a long-standing pattern of repression against literary and cultural expression in Balochistan. In 2022, former Ilm-o-Adab director Lala Faheem Baloch was similarly abducted and held in illegal detention. Earlier, in January 2025, police raided a bookstall in Gwadar, detaining students and confiscating books. The Human Rights Council of Balochistan condemns these attacks on literature and freedom of expression and demands the immediate release of Changaiz Sahir.

Balochistan has long been a black hole for journalism not because stories are absent, but because reporting them is nearly impossible, while becoming the story is dangerously easy.
For over seven decades, journalists in Balochistan have faced the ultimate price for speaking truth to power. Many have been murdered, forcibly disappeared, or silenced through threats and exile simply for fulfilling their professional and moral duty. The region has become a graveyard for press freedom, and the danger has now expanded beyond Balochistan to other provinces.
Recent examples include the forcible disappearance of journalist Ahmad Noorani’s brothers, the abduction of Imran Riaz Khan, and violent attacks on journalists like Asad Toor all part of a broader pattern of state-backed intimidation.
In Balochistan, the list is even longer and bloodier. Sajid Hussain Baloch, Razzaq Gul, Ilyas Nazar, Rasheed Baloch, and Munir Shakir were Baloch journalists who were brutally silenced not for any crime, but simply for speaking the truth. These were not isolated incidents they are part of a systematic war on journalism waged in one of the most militarized and censored regions in South Asia.
Just last night, Javed MB, a journalist from Gwadar, reportedly received direct threats from security forces a blatant and unacceptable act of intimidation. This isn’t just condemnable it demands resistance. The silencing of Javed MB is not an isolated case; it is part of a larger, well-documented campaign to choke dissent and independent journalism in Balochistan.
Journalism is not a crime. Journalism is not terrorism.
It is a noble and constitutionally protected profession. Every attack on a journalist is an attack on democracy and truth.
We urge international institutions and human rights organizations to intervene:
@UNHumanRights@UNESCO@RSF_inter@cpj@Amnesty@hrw
These institutions must:
•Investigate attacks on journalists in Pakistan
•Hold the Pakistani state and its security apparatus accountable
•Demand protections for press freedom and independent media in Balochistan and beyond
Silence is complicity.
We call on journalists, writers, civil society, and global defenders of free speech to speak out, write, and resist this authoritarian crackdown on press freedom in Pakistan.
What is happening in Balochistan is not just censorship it is a calculated erasure of reality.
And those of us who still can, must refuse to look away.
