PAKISTAN: The recent arrests of Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan, nephews of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in cases relating to the 9 May (2023) protests, are part of political witch-hunt aimed at intimidating the family members of political opponents. Amnesty International calls on Pakistani authorities to immediately release Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan.

Their arrest is part of a larger pattern of politically motivated targeting and detention against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to crush political opposition and muzzle dissent in the country. Targeting family members of opposition leaders and activists by the government is becoming an increasingly common practice in Pakistan and must stop.

My sister in law @ZainHQ wife has been picked up from near our home by masked men in plain clothes and multiple cars. Two cars blocked her car and took her away forcefully. They have not been able to break us for the last year and half despite all kinds of threats and are now resorting to such low level tactics.

Geneva: UN Human Rights Committee to review Pakistan’s human rights records amid ‘rampant rights abuses’

“Pakistan’s review comes at a crucial time for the country, as human rights violations and abuses remain rampant,” said Babu Ram Pant, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for South Asia.

So many innocent lives killed or mistreated, so many atrocities committed and so many UN resolutions broken… No government, no international body or human rights organisation successfully intervenes. In the last few weeks there have been serious and concerning developments regarding my sons’ father, Imran Khan’s treatment in prison. The Pakistan authorities have stopped all visits to him by his family and his lawyers. They have also postponed all court hearings. In addition to cutting off in- person visits, and in defiance of a court order, his weekly calls to his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, who are British and who live in London, were stopped on 10th September. We have received reports that the authorities have now turned off the lights and electricity in his cell and he is no longer allowed to leave his cell at any time. The jail cook has been sent on leave. He is now completely isolated, in solitary confinement, literally in the dark, with no contact with the outside world. His lawyers are concerned about his safety and well-being.

These actions come in the context of ongoing targeting of Imran’s family, as well as his party (PTI) members and supporters in an attempt to silence them and all political opposition in Pakistan. Imran’s nephew, Hassan Niazi, a civilian, has been detained in military custody since August 2023. More recently, Imran Khan’s sisters, Uzma and Aleema Khan, who have continued to speak out on his behalf, have also been arrested as they made their way peacefully to a demonstration and they are currently being held in jail, despite there being no proper or lawful basis for their imprisonment.

In June this year the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Imran is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained and called for his immediate release.

 As a matter of urgency , we are calling for Imran Khan’s release, and for the release of his sisters and nephew as well as for his sons’ contact with their father to be re-established, so that they may have assurance first-hand that he is well and not being mistreated.

I usually don’t comment on Pakistani politics. I disagree with IK on many political issues. But this is not about politics- it’s about my children’s father, his human rights & international law. For the past few years, I’ve been bullied & harassed into silence by PML-N goons, including rape threats & countless conspiracy theories. Meanwhile Twitter/ X is banned in Pakistan, PTI party members & civilian supporters have been abducted, anyone with a platform who was speaking out is now in jail & silenced, Imran Khan’s photo and name have been censored on state television (they have even redacted his image from any coverage of Pakistan’s World Cup win of 92!)
I owe it to my children to try to create some awareness about what is happening in Pakistan. Please help in any way that you can. Thank you.

PAKISTAN: Rather than address the legitimate demands to hold accountable the officials responsible for extrajudicial killing, Pakistani authorities instead chose to fiercely crack down against peaceful participants of the Sindh Rawadari March in Karachi on 13 October.

The police meted out tear gas and batons against the peaceful protesters, arbitrarily detained several participants and charged the organizers under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code – an alarming example of lawfare to silence dissent. The protesters were demanding accountability for the extrajudicial killing of a 32-year-old doctor accused of blasphemy by police officers in Umerkot in September.

🚨🇵🇰IMRAN KHAN FACES HARSH CONDITIONS IN ILLEGAL DETENTION

He is continuing to endure severe conditions in illegal detention, with authorities blocking all access to him and reportedly abducting his lawyer.

His family, including his sisters and wife, is also unlawfully confined.

Khan is being held in a death cell and subjected to extreme heat without electricity, which amounts to psychological torture aimed at breaking his spirit.

His PTI party has called these "unforgivable violations of fundamental human rights" that demand immediate attention.
