Broken Systems, Broken Lives: The Cost of Sri Lanka’s Economic Collapse
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis was not just about failing policies. It was about families waiting in long lines for fuel, only to return home empty-handed. It was about parents skipping meals so their children could eat. It was about hospitals turning away the sick because life-saving medicines were no longer available.
As debt piled up, life became a daily struggle. Grocery shelves emptied, schools shut their doors, and families pawned their belongings just to survive. Women in rural areas took on extra work to put food on the table, while many children dropped out of school because their families could no longer afford supplies or transport. Food prices soared, and hope slipped further away.
When frustration boiled over, people took to the streets, demanding answers. Their voices forced leaders to step down, but the hardship remained. Debt restructuring is underway, but many still feel its burden the most.
When economies collapse, it is never the powerful who suffer first. It is the families, the children, and the struggling communities.

The #Maldives is facing unprecedented financial strain as the nation’s sukuk bonds, compliant with Islamic finance principles, have plummeted to 71 cents on the dollar after Fitch Ratings downgraded the country's debt for the second time in just two months.
